I just upgraded to the X from a 7+ because I’m in the iPhone upgrade program through Apple. I love the X FaceID & large screen in a smaller physical form factor. That said, if you’re going to be satisfied with a 7 series, there’s a lot of advantages: the aluminum body is much more durable than the all glass 8 & X; screen is great, phone is fast; water resistant; and price is really reasonable. If there had been no X release I would have kept my 7+.

iPhone 6 user here who upgraded to X. I highly recommend it. Cool things i like about the X: Face ID is quicker than Touch ID, waterproof is nice to have, and wireless charging is really convenient.

I just went from the 6 to the X and I am extremely happy that I did.

The 7 and the 8 are just iterations of your 6 and will be boring to you. The X is only a few dollars more than those other devices anyway. The battery life on the X is amazing, the other features incredible too.

This, coming from an iPhone 6 too.

Yeah... my iPad Pro reminds me every day that my iPhone 6 is old, slow, and lacking in many ways. TouchID doesn’t work well with my left thumb for some reason, so I’m hopeful that FaceID will be an improvement for me.

What impressed me most about the X in the store was the camera. The dual camera and controls are fast and responsive. My 6 was like that when I bought it, but now the camera controls take seconds to respond to input and the camera sometimes refuses to work. It’s also easy to toggle between wide and telephoto. The display was nice, but I wasn’t as wowed as some are. I have no complaints about the display on the 6, other than lack of True Tone, which I have enjoyed on the iPad Pro.

I really liked the swipe vs the home button. I didn’t expect to, but it felt easier to me for one handed operation. I will also admit that I played with animoji longer than was probably socially acceptable at a display counter. :p My 7 year old was with me and she loved it. The facial recognition for animoji was fun and impressive. It’s one of those technologies that makes me excited to see where it will go... not just the facial recognition (which can have negative impacts as well) but the 3D dot projector technology that is now part of a smartphone.

If your poor, do not have the MONEY and CANNOT AFFORD newer Phones buy iPhone 7.
If you do CARE about speed but Feels like upgrading to the Same phone buy an iPhone 8 (However still looks like an iPhone 6 which is over 3 years ago)
IF you wanted the Face ID Features, Luxury phone, Fantastic Camera, and Bezel less screen buy an iPhone X

If money is not an issue, then X it is..
Else 6s (comes with headphone jack) and save cash until next year full frontal models see the light...

Of course, you could always spend ~$80 to replace the battery on your iPhone 6 and wait to see what next year brings. The 2nd generation X might even be slightly cheaper (but don't hold your breath, we are talking about Apple here). This also only leaves you with 64 GB of storage to get you through the next ~10 months.

It's $8 a month. That's $0.25 cents a day. If someone needs to put that towards "something else", that's great. They certainly shouldn't have a smartphone. Stop with the soapbox. It's chump-change.
$300 is $300, no matter how many payments you break it down into.

Not sure how the average person here (is there such a thing?) can advise somebody that has 5,000 videos on his iphone. That is surely not something many people can relate to.

I constantly switch between safari, mail, rss reader, youtube, etc. so the X is a must for fast “swipe on home indicator” app switching (whereas both double clicking Home button and
the force touch on side border thing are flow breakers).

Plus touchID forgets my finger prints in a matter of hours because of a dry skin condition so FaceID will be the first time I can actually stop entering the code.

That said, I’ve seen some ridicolously good deals on 8/8+ from online retailers as their street price fell after the X.
But they’re stuck in the past.

The best VALUE right now is an iPhone 7. You can get an iPhone 7 256GB used for about $500 (give or take). It's only a year old, so you're still going to have plenty of life left on it. If we assume iPhones last about three years (it's generally people's anxieties about needing a new phone that causes people to upgrade faster), then the iPhone 7 will have at least two years left.

However, if OP is willing to trade in his phone, he might get up to $300 on trade-in credit towards the 8 or X.

Not sure about US, but in EU the 7 both used or new is too close to the absolute lowest online price for 8 new to be worth it.
Also remember that base 7 is almost unusable 32GB and base 8 is good enough 64GB. The 128GB 7 is too close to 64GB 8.
[doublepost=1510683144][/doublepost]Just realised you said “256GB”.

256GB
a10 2+2core not a11 6core
no 4k 60fps
no truetone
no wireless charging

you really must be after that huge storage to prefer the 7...
given that it is not even a particularly good camcorder compared to the latest iphones..
maybe a huge music collection..

You seem to keep your phones for a long time if you still have the 6. Get the X.

And $300 can be a lot or a little depending on the person and the context. Same can be said for $1,000. I think many (maybe even most) of the people on this forum who are discussing whether or not to buy the X can technically afford it. The question is whether or not you can justify it to yourself... just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Sometimes the price of something can seem absurd simply because there are less expensive options. And it certainly is absurd to pay more for a flagship smartphone if it doesn't get you something you value. Determining something's value to you can be the tricky part. Sometimes it's easier to break it down into daily increments because it's easy to visualize what you get out of your investment. It's easy to get swept up into the emotional part of wanting the new shiny thing, but thinking hard about how you use your smartphone on a daily or weekly basis can inform a more rational decision. Then it's easy to ask yourself if that's worth the daily cost to you... but only advisable if you keep in mind your daily discretionary income.

If you can't tell by that paragraph, I'm a master when it comes to deciding that I want something and then Jedi-mind-tricking myself into rationalizing my purchase  On the other hand this works both ways, and I am quite frugal when it comes to many types of purchases... especially those that won't have a positive daily (or at least weekly) impact for me.

I also upgraded from a 6 this year as the 6s, 7 and 8 did not feel much of an upgrade to be honest. So went for the X.

I didn’t need the extra power and honestly the 6 was still serving me well but wanted something new and that would last me for another 3 years so the X was the only choice.

No, it's not.

There is a difference between $300 a month (expensive), $300 a year (affordable), or $8 a month (chump change).

If someone is fretting over $300 over the 3 year lifespan of a smartphone, they shouldn't be looking at a $1200 iPhone X.

Just to be clear, I could buy an iPhone X outright from the Apple store today and financially I wouldn't really even notice. I also recognize that not everyone is in the same position as me and coming up with $1000 right now for this kind of purchase isn't something they can do. For me personally I just question whether that kind of money on a smart phone is worth it considering my current phone does everything I need it to, and I can use the money to pay down my mortgage faster instead. If I broke my phone tomorrow I would probably go through the same exercise to decide what to do i.e. X is currently the best of everything but the 7 is half the cost and at the end of the day still does everything I need it to.

I'm starling to look at phones also and - if you are comfortable with 64 GB - the 8 seems to be a good buy at $699. Thats probably where I'll end up. Latest processor and some new features. The extra $300 for the X doesn't seem at all worth it to me.

Not sure where you came up of the assertion that the iPhone 7/8 will be boring to the OP. Only they will decide what's boring. Especially considering that's two of the options they are considering purchasing.

Second, the iPhone X is not just a "few dollars more." Thats False. It's significantly more expensive and the OP stated that the price of the iPhone X costs a lot of money and is making them undecided.

My Suggestion is the iPhone 8. It's milestones better than the iPhone 6 and has way more features and capabilities as well. It's also significantly faster, and the camera is much improved. At minimum, you have 14 days to lease try the iPhone 8 and decide if it's for you.
In reality, MOST people especially in ASIA prefer the LATEST and GREATEST. Even if people bought an iPhone 8 people would identify it as an iPhone 6 even your using an iPhone 8. Sorry, but iPhone 8 is MUCH closer to iPhone 6 design it has bigger bezels than X by the way.

iPhone 6/6S/7 that upgrading to iPhone 8 is enough for some reasons like speed boost, but most of the people nowadays are SHOW OFF's especially in the mall. iPhone 8 Users are Satisfied but DEEP inside of their HEART, they wish they had an iPhone X because other people thought it's an iPhone 6 lol even it's an 8. In reality you have to FACE a lot of people not because they are IMMATURE, just like what i saw in the mall some woman even senior citizen showing off their iPhone X to the iPhone 8 users, when having a coffee... sorry but that's life.

What do you guys suggests?

Thank you!
If you have a 6, the 7 and 8 or not much different. If money is an issue, and you want something "new to you", get the 7. Otherwise take the plunge and get the X. No point getting the 8 as it's too close in price to the X and looks no different really. Also, don't fall prey to the 64GB vs 256GB temptation unless you absolutely need the space. It may "only" be an extra 150, but if you don't need it then it's a total waste. I've got a 64GB X and have 40GB free with everything on it I want right now, including music downloads from Google Play.

I’m in the exact same boat as the OP.
Sure it’s been about 3 years, but my iPhone 6 still does everything I need to. I don’t need the latest and greatest.

But in order to run watch OS4 on my new Series 3 AW, I need to run iOS 11.

I suppose I can try iOS11 on the iPhone 6, but everything I’ve read suggests it’s not a good experience.
Ideally I’d love to squeeze another year out of this. Then pick up an iPhone 8 or X next year.

I would stay away from iOS 11. My phone has been pure dog **** since they released it. considering switching to the S8. Can basically get all the features of the X in a cheaper phone

Thanks. This may determine whether I keep my AW or not.

My iPhone 6 is showing its age. Battery requires topping off mid-day and it’s slow... often freezing for a few seconds and taking much longer than my iPad Pro to open apps and load web pages.

I highly recommend checking out the options in person. I was on the fence, but after playing with them in person a few hours ago, I’m absolutely going with the X. I want dual cameras, but I don’t want a plus phone. One-handed operation is important to me and the iPhone 8 Plus just didn’t feel secure in my hand. All of them have excellent displays, and the 8’s and X have excellent cameras. The lack of a home button on the X did not bother me at all. I got the hang of swiping up right away and it just felt natural and easy. Coming from the 6, which has a home button you can actually press, I thought the home button on the 8’s felt awkward. I’m sure I’d get used to it, but what matters to me more are dual cameras and one handed operation.

I’m with you on the storage. I wish there was a 128 option for less. I’m going to have to pony up for 256 since 64 just isn’t quite enough looking ahead.

Sean
This was my I dilemma--I finally opted for the X 256--no regrets, so much more tech than the 6, Go for it
