I'm wanting to head into a Verizon store and pick up a new iPhone 5 64GB. Any way to tell by the box if the build is old enough and may be on 6.1.2 or older?

The only thing that I can think of would be the serial number of the phone. Not sure if that will help you determine when it was made or what firmware is on it.

There is no way to tell from the box. Chances are it will have 6.1.3. It is almost impossible to find 6.1.2 anymore.

I'm getting my replacement Monday. It'll be interesting to see what's on it...

Actually, quite a few people here are reporting both refurbs and new phones are still coming with 6.1.2

My completely unscientific assumption is that 16GB will be the rarest, since it is the most common, followed by the 32GB and lastly, you guessed it, 64GB. I wouldn't be surprised if many 64GB refurbs and even NIB are still on 6.1.2, or even earlier.

But, as you said, and AFAIK, there is no way to tell from the box.

I've seen very few reports of 6.1.2 coming on refurbs or new iPhones the last few days. A week ago it was about 50/50. But it seems to be much more 6.1.3 now.

I guess you can look up the serial number here and see if it's just after or before 6.1.3 release. Carrier stores seem to go through their stock slower than Apple stores, so you have a shot, especially if it's 64GB

Many T-Mobile iPhones 5's shipped with 6.1.2 and it was well after the 6.1.3 release. I don't see how that is helpful.

Not many people buy 64gb so chances are, it will be 6.1, or 6.1.2, as those stay on the shelf longer. Good luck

Retail stores also keep less stock of 64gb iPhones so it should make no difference in terms of what comes on the phone. Also, 6.1 was never shipped on a T-Mobile iPhone (only 6.1.2 and 6.1.3)

As always, mileage may vary depending on location, popularity of the model, etc. I'm sure there are more people getting 6.1.2 than those reporting here. The take home point is that you won't know until you get it, right?

Got my new phone on April 30th, it was on 6.1.2. Well after 6.1.3 has been out.
