and experienced the same exact events in their life in the same location, would there be a difference in personality? our does our environment define us at the "intrinsic" level?

Doubt it. We're wired differently in a physical way. Now a better question would be to append to that and say they person was a clone of the other, now that's deep!

But now that I think of it, twins fit this scenario. Unless you mean if it happened hypothetically where they didn't know each other, a parallel universe kind of thing. To a point, the environment can make us into who we are, but ultimately we make our own choices to change the way this environment affects us.

I think your choices define you the most. If one person decided to read a lot of books and take a second job, and the other just watched TV all the time, they would have very different outcome. Your environment gives you things like your accent and mannerisms.

As a Quadruplet, we all have different personalities, its an environment thing.

Take a look at siamese twins, there are a few famous sets who are still unseparated. They fit your criteria, and as far as I can tell, have very unique personalities.

Genes would be the difference, and that's a pretty big one, so yes they would very different.

I like to think about a similar situation: if you could go back in time and restart life at the moment you were born, with the world being the 100% exact same as it was at that instance, would you be the same? I think yes.

Even slight differences in hormone levels will cause different personalities.

Also, consider the effect of things such as appearance, height, and race. You'd be treated differently if you were not white.

Both interesting points. It would indicate that genetics, hormone levels (as Abstract wrote), and other very subtle factors may control our personalities more than environment.

Just a thin veil over the 'nature v nurture' debate.

    The correct answer is both.

Nature vs nuture presupposes that we're robots, and then asks whether we are robots controlled by nature or robots controlled by society. But we observably aren't robots, so it's not a deep, timeless debate but rather the fail result of a false premise.

Your environment gives you little things like your accent and manners, your genes decide if you're pretty or strong or fast. These things limit your options but they don't choose amongst the ones you do have for you, that requires an act of mental effort.

came across this thread on the spy.macrumors.com i find it interesting ...

me and this guy i work with have the same likes in music and play the same video games and enjoy alot of the same types of music And games... an having chatted have come to an understanding that some people could even grow up without have seen "the brave little toaster" or reading the book "where the wild things are" ... very strange i know.. But none-the-less ... we have found out that we were born on the same day the same year...

while our physical appearances are different, our personalities are simmilar (saracastic, Sassy, always joking around. )

just thought i'd throw in my two cents :p

I went to college with a girl who was exactly 1 year older than me and we also had well, pretty much the same personality. We looked completely different but it was nice knowing someone who was just like me (as scary a concept as that is :D).
But we also share a birthday with Elvis, David Bowie, R.Kelly and we're nothing like them.

And there's another 400,000 people on this planet who also share that date of birth. You're not like most of them. It's not uncommon to come across them however. Given that you end up working in the same place, and therefore live in the same sort of place, and given the tendency of people to socialise with people roughly the same age....there really isn't anything particularly rare or strange about finding a colleague has the same d.o.b.
