if a friend from Europe is shipping me her unlocked iPhone 12 Pro, what is a reasonable declared value for US Customs?

the said iPhone 12 Pro was originally purchased from the Apple Store(physical store) in Germany. It had been used for the last year. There are a couple of scratches on the side and a tiny crack just below the notch.(from being dropped on the stairs, according to her)

She just switched back to the Android camp(Samsung S21), so she's giving me the iPhone 12 Pro as a gift.

Obviously she will still have to put a declared value for customs... but not sure how much to put down. Can it be the average selling price for an identical used phone in the US?(for example, based on Swappa prices)

Get a trade in quote from Apple and print it out. If there's any argument. Show them. This is what Apple would give me for it.

I am not a customs or tax professional. But if I were facing a similar situation, I would either do what velocityg4 recommends or print out three recent completed sales on eBay for a iPhone12 Pro in similar condition and calculate the average of the eBay selling prices.

There may not be any customs due on it if she declares it as used and a gift. Depends on the mood of the customs inspector at the US Post Office port of entry. But as a precaution, a declared value should be included.

oh that's a great idea! I can't believe I didn't think of that. (especially since I have traded 4 phones on Apple's trade-in website in the last 5 month!)

although... I just looked... Apple's website has no trade in value for iPhone 12(any version) just yet. only up to the 11... :( BestBuy.com does offer $675 for iPhone 12 Pro, so I'll just use that number. :)
