Is it guaranteed 9? This will be a gift for my parents and I'd like to stick to 8 for as long as possible for their use. I just ordered it online today for Black Friday.

I have 9.1 on my Air 2 and it isn't as smooth as 8.4. My parents don't need all the bells and whistles.

Huh. Did you set it up as new or upgrade over your existing setup? I set my Air2 as new when I installed iOS 9, and it's been just as smooth as it was on the 8. I understand what you mean by your parents not needing the bells and whistles, but I see no need to go out of your way to avoid 9.

My air2 came with 8.4 and I was really paranoid about updating to 9.0.2 when jailbreak came out

I'm still glad I did. Works well:)

The included features on iOS 9 vs 8.4 make it worth the upgrade even if its not as "smooth". Split screen and slide-over are extremely useful. With that being said, I am running 9.2 B4 and its just as "smooth" as 8.4 and I have zero issues.

I bought an iPad Air 2 a week ago from Target and it came with iOS 9.0.1. So I guess it varies.

iOS 8 sucks big time. I'd suggest any device with iOS 8 on it to upgrade to 9.1.
