if i turn the location icon on/off it makes no difference

i tried both then went to google maps and the purple icon still showed up. using iPhone 4s 5.01....does yours do this?

toggling the purple icon on or off refers to the background location functions such as sending reports to apple, or setting the clock based on location, but not for active apps like maps.
