If I update the firmware on Western Digital MyBook Essential Drive Will I lose Data?

So I just got this new Mybook 2 TB drive at costco, and it says it needs an update to firmware, but I'm nervous because I have data on it that's not backed up. Does updating the firmware affect the data on the drives?

No, it will not delete your data.

cool, I updated it just fine. Thanks. Now the question is I want to use smartware which normally comes on the drive's partition, however I'd deleted the partition when i got the drive. I see the update for it on WD's website, but i don't see the actual program. Any idea where I can get a copy?
