Hi,

I run a blog, and I'm always tracking to see which articles/posts get the most views but I realised I have no real benchmark to see if the number's I am getting are any good?

I'm curious to hear from website owners and bloggers to see what kind of traffic they're getting. Can you post your numbers up so I can compare please?

These are mine below. Are they good or do I need to work harder?

Trying to compare doesn't really work too well. A lot of it depends on your audience, topic, frequency of posts, quality of posts, etc.

I envy your numbers. I get between 2-9 visits a day, and between 2-20 page views.

I think I'm not that interesting. Also, it may have something to do with the fact that I hardly ever update my website (I don't want to post too much, because I'm going to rewrite it, but I never have the time to rewrite it).

Oh well. (Probably doesn't help that I don't link to it when I get the chance - like, I could have it in my signature, and I don't).

I know the feeling. I haven't updated my blog in a few months because I keep telling myself I'm going to code up a blogging system, but that project seems to keep getting pushed to the side.

Also with blog stats, you get different results depending if your web site is a blog itself, or if the blog is just some small part. For me it's small part and I don't link to it. The stats you (Renderz) show, is that for your entire site, or just a blog directory?

Ahh, statcounter. I use it myself along with Google Analytics. It depends on your audience, types of post, content, etc. It is good for your site to have at least twice the number of page views than unique visitors if you have more than one page on your site. For instance, if you have 200 unique visitors, and 400 pageviews, then on average it is 2 pageviews per visitor.

If you are a new site, then you are doing very good. Mind telling me how you've done it? Your Tuesday-Thursday hits are at about my top days, though your unique visitors are great. I recommend working to increase the returning visitor count and the amount of pageviews... If you can keep your unique visitors where they are at Tuesday, the you are doing good!

I've attached my stat counter stats... My site is getting close to reaching its 3 year anniversary. My site isn't just a blog though. We have a blog as the main page, and then we branch into guides and downloads for video games, so our stats are probably going to be very different from yours. We've grown slow. The first year was weak, the second did well, and the third is doing great!

On the whole, I agree but it's more out of curiousity and so I have a rough benchmark to go for when comparing. I realise it's futile to compare like for like.

The stats you (Renderz) show, is that for your entire site, or just a blog directory?

The stats are just for my blog, I update and write about once a day. When I write reviews or articles then I post them to forums. I've just written one about Heath Ledger which I'll be posting on forums.

For instance, if you have 200 unique visitors, and 400 pageviews, then on average it is 2 pageviews per visitor.

Yeah, I want to attract and maintain better loyalty. Overall my website is averaging 2.65 pages per session (according to Analytics which has been going for a few months).

My blog is fairly new, it's existed for months (after discovering the wonders of Wordpress) but I've really upped my activity on the blog pages as an online experiment to see what kind of reach I can get, and what who my potential audience/customers are. How I do it is simple, I post something new every day and if I feel it's something a community would find interesting then I post the link on forums.

By doing that though you open yourself up for critism; there are always people who will disagree and some even hostile. Just ignore them, don't reply, don't take the bait. Nobody is forcing them to click the links.

These are my popular pages:

London based band with a gorgeous female lead singer - http://www.renderz.com/blog/?page_id=171

My review of the Nikon 70-200mm AF-S VR lens http://www.renderz.com/blog/?p=207

My article on how kick ass the Mac Pro is using Photoshop & Lightroom http://www.renderz.com/blog/?p=135

And I think I'll stop it there.

Can I just ask - is your blog Apple related - it would explain why Tuesdays were so popular?

I do discuss Apple but not in any great detail. I focus on photography more looking at writing more reviews, post relevant links and upload photos from my shoots. What happen's on Tuesdays then?

Since I started keeping track, I've had about 5-10 hits a day. That's just in the past 4 days since I installed StatPress though, no idea how much I got before that.

Don't you monitor referral links too? That should give you a good idea why you have spikes.

That's what I was going to suggest. Also if you've been posting a link to the site somewhere recently that gets a lot of views that may have something to do with it. That of course would become revealed when looking at referrers.

I had a similar boost lately myself. I determined it was because I had sent sitemaps to different search engines the day before, so their bots swarmed my site. However, I cannot confirm that because the referral links showed me my normal hits, but did not show the increased number of bots. I don't really know why, but that is what happened...

I've had a staggering boost recently.

On my less than 2 week old blog, I've had;

1,193 Total Hits

Busiest day: 436 — Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Views today: 436

Yesterday (Tuesday, August 5, 2008) I got 169 Hits.

Most of the traffic was referred through Mac Rumors - So thanks Guys!

I've never been this popular in my life! :):p

I'll have to get a stat-counter and monitor returning visitors, as to my knowledge, the built in stat-counter at Wordpress.com does not have this function.

Renderz, those numbers look fine to me - and your maintaining traffic which is the best thing - be you - and whatever you do, don't stop doing what your doing!

Link to your website

Does anyone on this thread want to trade links? I can put links on my site and vice versa? We can all help each other out. So long as it's not too radical or porn then I'm ok to link it. My preferences would be photography, design, anything creative, and you post quite regularly.

[Edit] - Terry - Just shot you an e-mail.

I'd be more than happy to trade links with you.

I update my blog everyday, without fail, with something or other.

Text or image (88 x 55 pixels) links accepted :)

Facebook is a great tool to use.

As an experiment I posted an article about a band video shoot I photographed. it was an awesome experience; so just to see what would happen I messaged people who were interested in the band and the results were startling. The page views per visit increased by talking about the band & photography, where as if I purely talk about photography it returns average results.

So what does this mean? Well it may sound obvious, but to get a wider audience try to tie your interest with other interest or groups and watch your audience figures go loopy.
