Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I heard if you turn off 3G while say not browsing over the Internet or on wifi at home you could conserve a bit more battery.

My question is what are the disadvantages of doing that?

It could take a bit longer for your voice mails and MMS to come in.

It depends on your operator. In some cases it'll result in you falling back to 2G, which is slower for data but uses less energy. However, not all operators have 2G so in that case turning off 3G will kick you off the network completely.
