    Eh. It's a start, anyway.

I found this the other day. It's something we can at least take hope in:

All of which lee would probably tell you is cold comfort, but the progress of gay rights is slowly but surely paralleling that of racial civil rights. Some day that will include marriage too, all over the country. It's inevitable. All that remains is for anti-gay rights people to acknowledge that reality.

I agree, it is nice to see this progress, yet disheartening that we are still talking about separate rights. I haven't delved into he text of the bill too much, but it looks like it is a pretty comprehensive bill that covers a lot of legal areas, such as insurance, medical decisions and division of property.

It's a good first step, and I am proud to live here! :D There will be no ruling of the people by the religious right in this state.

Well done Illinois. Not perfect, but certainly good news.

Now for the obligatory court challenges of course...

Still, it's better than separate and unequal.

That's how I see it. Don't really know whether or not I'm happy about the news. I can't believe that in 2010 we still have separate but equal.

And I hate to say it...

But I expect this bill to either be struck down, or challenged in court by the pro-gay marriage front, per Brown v. Board of Education. I'm pretty sure the anti-gay side already has lawyers salivating for their day in court on this so they can slaughter the bill with the precedents set by Brown.

I hope it doesn't happen, but if it does, just be prepared to take one step back to take a giant leap forward.

I don't think so, brad. People here are pretty supportive of gays. And the pro-gay marriage people are pretty happy about it right now too.

Don't get me wrong; I'm actually hoping that it does stays. One thing it does have over other civil union laws is health benefits, SS, and provisions for ill health/next of kin, etc. That's HUGE.

I'm just worried that some against the movement my try to invalidate the bill by using Brown. It could also go that those for gay marriage may also want to use Brown to gain true equality. This is a step in the right direction, yes; I just hope that those against it don't try to throw previous precedent at it to invalidate the whole lot.

Easier said than done. As you probably know, at my age (43) that's difficult. Once gay men pair off, they pair off for good, usually in their late 30's. There's not much to choose from, everyone my age is paired off. That leaves me with younger guys or much older guys. No offense, but neither is the best option. :(
