I'm stunned by how good InDesign is...

Ever since it was released, I've thought, well, InDesign deserves to win the war, since at a cursory glance, it's much, much better than Quark... and they released two full versions (v1 and v2) in the time it took Quark to go from 4.04 to 4.1, which shows they've got the right attitude to R&D.

But I've kept using Quark, because it's the industry standard blah blah blah.

Then today, I got a job which is all InDesign. I've spent the day using it, and while I'm not totally across the shortcuts and where to find things yet, I can already tell it kills Quark. Even if just for the fact that when I don't know how to do something, I think "Well how do you do that in Photoshop / Illustrator?" and then it's easy. And the PDF workflow... sheesh. Beautiful.

Anyway, it's been such a joy to use - a revelation even - that I thought I'd make this encouraging post for all those wondering whether they should be bothered making the switch.

Sure, it's going to be a while before the Quark icon disappears from my dock - but I now plan to use InDesign whenever I possibly can (my printer and bureau support it now, yay!).

Thanks Adobe. You guys have got it going on.

PS I don't work for Adobe. I'm just damn impressed.

Cool!! I've been using InDesign for years and find it 1000x more intuitive and productive than Quark could ever be... (I'd used Quark since 94)

Adobe has their UI's totally nailed, and the integration between products it is spot on... you find that if you can work one Adobe app, then there's a good chance you'll be able to work the other Adobe app's without too much trouble...

I can understand people wanting to stick with Quark because it's what they know, they don't have time to re-learn another package blah, blah, blah.... but InDesign takes like a day to learn because of it's similarites with both Quark and other Adobe products, and it provides a much better way of working.

    Wicked! ;)
