My iMac 2015 would not support Mojave. Once loaded Mojave almost continuously displays the bouncing beach ball. In order to speed things up I installed an external SSD. I still had the same problem. I reloaded High Sierra and it runs just fine.

That’s really unusual.
Mojave is an iteration of High Sierra. Have you considered calling Applecare? They’ve been surprisingly helpful.
I also don’t know about any incompatibilities between Mojave and High Sierra either. It didn’t remove any features as far as I’m aware.
Was this an update and install, or a clean install? Both had the same issue? Did you check activity monitor to see if something was acting up? Did you install Mojave and do all the updates?
