iMac G3 Desktop with MS Office 4.2.1

Hi I own an old iMac G3 with OS 9.2, 256mb ram and a 10gb harddrive. I am giving it to my youngest son so I loaded an old copy of MS Office 4.2.1 and for some reason I cannot use Excel or Powerpoint. It freezes when I try to run it. Is there a way to fix this or should I do some upgrading on this iMac. In the meantime I love my new iMac with OS X. Thank you in advance with any help that you might provide.
