i have just decided to buy a mac and then it is very hard to wait till it gets updated

i don't think anyone really knows, but we can all predict. my prediction? tomorrow. that's right, you heard it here first!

Haha. We should have a prediction system. If we predict something right, we get some points; and if we predict something wrong, we get points deducted.
But of course, since predict something right is much harder than predict something wrong, perhaps predict something right gives you 100 point, while predict something wrong deduct 5 points.

And the point can be displayed under your name, beside the title.

Like that?

that dident help me of course
but it made me laugh so that is ok :p

fine, i can be serious, too. when intel released core 2 duo last september, apple quickly adopted and released imacs that same month. macbook pros came out a month after with macbooks a month after that. if that's to be any indication, we could expect new santa rosa imacs this month. but still, you never know. apple released a press statement last week stating intentions to ship macs with led displays in 2007. with this statement, you'd think the next iteration of imacs would include this technology. and then you'd have to wonder how far along apple is with their product development.

anyway, i still stand by my prediction. tomorrow!

yes i can't wait till tomorrow xD
but thx for the more serius answer :)

Since iMacs are not portable the battery saving benefits would not be as relevant to iMacs. Also, LED screens will have to get to be 24" before they could cover the iMac line. However, I do agree that we will see a new iMac being the first Mac to use the Santa-Rosa chipset which came out yesterday right?

I think May 9th is the official release date for Santa Rosa.

I'm slightly confused about the suggestion of putting this chipset in the iMacs. Aren't the current dedicated graphics cards in the iMacs considerably more powerful than Santa Rosa?

Not all Santa Rosa chipsets will include integrated graphics. Here is the Guide entry on it:

In May 2007[5] Intel plans to ship the Santa Rosa mobile platform. This will be the pairing of updated variants of Merom with the new Crestline chipset. The features will be derived off of the current desktop 965 series. It will come in the GM965 and PM965 versions. The updated Merom is housed in the new socket P. The new platform will sport an 800 MHz Front Side Bus [6] , 802.11n wireless, and Robson flash technology. The variants with integrated graphics feature the updated GMA X3000. [7]

NVIDIA has also announced that its GeForce Go 8 Series will launch alongside the Santa Rosa platform.

I think there is a general consensus that the iMac will go Santa Rosa in late May or June. It remains to be seen if Apple keeps WWDC more pro oriented or does indeed announce iMac revisions at it. Remember that the 24" iMac debuted a week before the Showtime event for the iTunes Movie Store and iTV preview with no official media event other than appearing on Apple's front page. And on a wednesday as well. So it is not inconcievable that Apple releases the Santa Rosa iMac revisions, even with possibly silver or black iMacs or who knows what other interesting changes prior to WWDC on a tuesday or wednesday. However, an overall design change would probably guarantee it being in the keynote. Also, as mentioned, the iMac isn't a portable and the won't benefit as much from the power saving of the LED screens. That along with the cost of the larger panels would indicate that the iMac will get Santa Rosa now and LED displays in the fall and that the portables will get Santa Rosa and LED displays this summer, starting with the MBP at or just after WWDC and the MB in July or early August.

If you'd like to look at it this way, on average, the iMac is updated every 168 days on average. It's been 244 days now since the last update, so based on averages, we could see it any time.

Drat! I've been waiting since December for an iMac update thinking new models were just around the corner - but now my old G4 fall-back computer has finally given up the ghost.

Now I've no option but to place my order with Apple or start losing revenue. So of course Apple will introduce an incredible new iMac next month that will turn this purchase into stale bread...

I'm starting to think that the iMac revision that introduces Santa Rosa to the Apple lineup could come May 15th or May 22nd or the wednesday of that week. That would give it 3-4 full weeks on the front page prior to WWDC. However, I would say that May 29th may be too late. By then it is only 13 days to the keynote and doubtful that anything would be announced at that point. Of course I'll be away from all things internet during that first week, but it would be a pleasant surprise to come home and see that it has been announced.

ok new question :)

and it dident get updated today :( hehe

it's gotta happen some day. why not today?

Definitely going to be quite soon. I'm betting around WWDC, but... you never know. I'm really interested in what the new "industrial" design is going to be.

From what I have read on this forum, Apple has a history of keeping the prices similar or the same but updating features such as higher cpu, hard drive, memory, etc.

This way they don't see declining prices that often happens to computers running Windows (Dell, HP...).
