It might be Sandy. A disruption in cell / data service from different carriers might cause it....?

    No problems in Michigan.

Apples servers are having problems in general right now.
I'm pretty sure it's because of the storm.

My messages are currently still going through and so are on some on east coast. I would expect any outages though to be because of the storm though.

The legendary "BBM for iPhones" more or less. Basically it just sends text, picture, and video messages to/from iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Mac over WiFi and cellular.

Doesn't iMessage just send pics over cellular and not wifi?

iMessage sends all pictures and texts over your data connection, not cellular.

OK, cellular data connection and not wifi, correct? My impression is that pictures cannot be sent via wifi while text can. Is that right?

As far as I know, when you have imessage enable, the picture goes over wifi, however I could be wrong. Normally a picture goes through your data connection, not cellular.

I'm roaming at 1X most weekends and when I am in a wifi setting my texts go right through but it takes forever for the pics to go through...if they ever do. My assumption has been that, like MMS, iMessage requires a data connection other than wifi.

iMessage goes entirely over data network, phone calls and SMS do not. After the storm many cell towers are down or overworked. Text messages will work better for some time in some areas. I had some experience with this the last few days.

^^ This. If you're having problems with iMessage, it's likely because the data network in your area is damaged or over capacity. Though if you happen to connecto a good Wifi hotspot, chances are it will work better for you.

No. Do not confuse iMessage with MMS/SMS. They are different things.

SMS/MMS will only use cellular data. You cannot send pure SMS text messages or pure MMS photos over Wifi.

iMessage uses whatever data network you're connected to. If Wifi is connected and working, then all of your iMessages will go through Wifi. If it's cellular, then it's going through that.
