Hello
I have Catalina working on a macbook from mid 2009. I have installed it through dosdude patch
When I open the imovie application, it opens correctly but when trying to create a new project or movie, a crash occurs closing the application.
the file system is AFPS.
the graphics card is nvidia geforce 9400m.
Is there any solution for this?
thanks.

What are you referring to? Just download the iMovie 10.1.12 package from here. The Internet Archive provides torrents for everything, but you don't have to use that download method.

I am having the same problem. I've tried downloading this multiple times from 3 different wifi connections and all of them are failing. I also tried downloading this from malavida.com. They are all failing.

I followed the dosdude upgrade to catalina and iMovie and garageband don't work. I've tried ALL KINDS OF STUFF.

Same problem those downloads aren't working for me. Did you ever figure out how to get iMovie to work?

If any of you guys are still having this issue, the solution is to use iMovie 10.1.12 (I uploaded a copy to Archive.org for those who don't have it).

@ASentientBot How were you able to first download the version of iMovie to upload it? I have been trying to get the latest version of iMovie on a really old 2010 Macbook Air and ultimately ended up using Dosdude's OS updater to get me to the Catalina version. Then when I tried to download the latest iMovie it still would not work so I went from High Sierra to Catalina and now might try downgrading to Mojave to see if that helps. Could you share with me how and potentially a copy of iMovie 10.1.14 please? Thanks for your time and any help!

I think you misunderstood the problem -- obtaining a copy of the latest iMovie is easy (just use the App Store), but no version after 10.1.12 will work on a computer without Metal support. So, getting 10.1.14 isn't hard now that you have Catalina, but it won't work since you're using a 2010 Air. You will need to use the download link that I posted in order to get a working copy of iMovie.

If you absolutely need the latest iMovie version for some reason, you'll need to get a new Mac :(

@ASentientBot Yes I misunderstood the problem. I was curious how you were able to download the raw iMovie install files of 10.1.12 and upload it. I had been hunting for torrents back when I was on High Sierra. There is a glitch in iMovie where some of my photos (which came from my iPhone) actually do not properly appear in iMovie. This glitch was addressed finally in version 10.1.14 of course. Like I said, I can install it and it runs until I try to create a new file then it crashes. Since Metal support was needed for the install of Mojave and Catalina on an old 2010 Macbook Air and @dosdude1 figured out a way around it so it can be both installed and function properly; my hope and wishful thinking was that there is some way around iMovie problem so I can install the latest to address that blacked out image glitch (example here):

Even if I could somehow. At first I thought the initial crashing issue with iMovie was related to the fact that Catalina is 64 bit only. I'm really surprised that more people do not have this blank/black image problem in iMovie and that it took so long to solve and that their solution was only for new models. Arg...

Thank you so much. I've never been able to afford a Mac and now that I finally have one, I love it but I really want to figure out a way how to address this iMovie version/blank image on preview problem. https://www.videohelp.com/software/iMovie/version-history

I got my iMovie install package from an Apple demo systems server.

Unfortunately, the method by which dosdude1 (and myself) got acceleration on Mojave/Catalina, does not get Metal to work. Rather, it gets the macOS UI up and running with the legacy OpenGL renderer/compositor.

Writing a Metal driver for an older GPU would be a monumental task which none of us have the skills or the time to perform, and there is no practical way to get the new iMovie version working without Metal.

So in summary, there is not and most likely will not be a solution to run the current iMovie on non-Metal GPUs. You might consider focusing on the other problem -- those iPhone photos -- by running them through a conversion with Preview, Photoshop, etc. and seeing if that lets them import properly. If that doesn't work, you'll most likely have to purchase a newer Mac, such as a 2015 MacBook Air.

Good luck.
