Is anyone able to input video clips into iMovie from an external camera? I cannot since Monterey 12.3 update but could before.

I am pretty new a this....Camera is listed under Location Services and when I click on camera it shows iMovie. Also, my camera is shown under Hardware -Firewire. The camera is connected using Firewire/Thunderbolt -USB-C. The FaceTime camera is detected in iMovie but my camera is not shown. Worked fine prior to Monterey 12.3 update.

I’m not sure I understand what are you trying to do, but you can try to:
- leave your camera connected
- close iMovie
- reset camera permission from Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) with this command
Code:
tccutil reset Camera
- open iMovie and grant it permission for camera access

Basically when I am in movie I click media input and my external camera and face camera show up. Since 12.3 only the face camera is shown.I was hoping I would get a lot of iMovie users with same problem and if they had contacted Apple. I am Leary of doing what you suggested with my very limited experience. All I do is iMovie. Appreciate your help and will pursue further with Apple. Thanks

Sadly, it appears that Apple has borked FireWire support in Monterey 12.3 and 12.3.1. DV cameras show up under About This Mac --> System Report --> FireWire, but cannot be accessed by iMovie, LifeFlix, etc. There is no known fix, so at this point, all you can do is revert to an earlier version of MacOS.
Thanks for the information. At least there is hope it will be fixed. I have been working on this for sometime now as I am not a big user but do a lot of iMovie projects with external camera footage input. In your experience is there likely to be a fix? Thanks again

Bob

I certainly hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. FireWire is very nearly deprecated, and so I don't think that fixing this will be a priority for Apple. Many users seem to have reached the same conclusion, and so are reverting to Big Sur to keep their workflows going. You may wish to file a bug report with Apple, the more noise they hear the more likely they'll eventually do something about it.

I have filed bug a report with Apple. It appears that none of the Apple software and other products where input from an external camera is an option would be affected. Lifeflix as an example and they must be concerned and hopefully will add to the noise. I am attaching a document someone sent me and as it is recent I am hoping it is an indication that Apple intends to continue support? I really appreciate your help on this issue which is very important to me.

If this is the way you used iMovie to capture video from the Firewire connected camera
that interface should be managed by /System/Applications/Image Capture.app
Does the camera appear in that app?
How about VLC? (File – Open Capture Device) It usually shows even webcams that do not appear in Image Capture.app.

No and No. As mentioned, the device only shows up in the System Profiler as in the screenshot below, but no apps can access it. This is on an M1 MacBook Pro running 12.3.1.

That is exactly my set up only to iMac and my camera much older but was always recognised. No camera detected in Image Capture and only FaceTime camera detected in VLC. Camera does show in Hardware under Firewire/ Thunderbolt USB-C so i assume my connections are okay.

Based on the way kexts are handled in a Mac with Apple silicon https://support.apple.com/guide/security/kernel-extensions-sec8e454101b/web
there is a slim chance that disabling SIP might fix the problem (csrutil disable from Terminal in Recovery)

Also, with SIP disabled, camera permission can be granted to apps that don’t display a dialog.
Example for VLC
Code:
sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.apple.TCC/TCC.db "insert into access values('kTCCServiceCamera','org.videolan.vlc',0,2,4,1,NULL,NULL,NULL,'UNUSED',NULL,0,1649347271);"

To delete the permission
Code:
sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.apple.TCC/TCC.db "delete from access where client='org.videolan.vlc' and service='kTCCServiceCamera';"

To list camera permissions
Code:
sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.apple.TCC/TCC.db "select * from access where service='kTCCServiceCamera';"

Thanks for your efforts here. I tried disabling SIP, but no luck. I'm not willing to mess with permissions, because frankly that is beyond my knowledge level, and I'm not comfortable messing around with Terminal commands that I don't understand.

It's worth bearing in mind that this problem only appeared in 12.3; before that, things were working fine on Apple Silicon. It seems some bug has been introduced into 12.3/ 12.3.1.

It may be a collateral victim of the FaceTime & Sandbox fixes in Monterey 12.3 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213183
FaceTime
Impact: A user may send audio and video in a FaceTime call without knowing that they have done so
Description: This issue was addressed with improved checks.
Sandbox
Impact: A malicious application may be able to bypass certain Privacy preferences
Description: The issue was addressed with improved permissions logic.

So far, Monterey 12.4 doesn’t seem to fix anything, it only manages to break Universal Control :)

Yep, I discuss that in this thread...

So if I want to import anything from my MiniDV tapes or even my old Hi8 tapes (via a Sony Digital8 camcorder), I need to use one of my slightly older Macs with FireWire and/or Thunderbolt running a pre-Monterey Mac OS and capture the DV footage on that. Granted I almost never shoot anything on MiniDV nowadays, but still, this is going to be hard for people that want to archive their older DV/HDV/Digital8 tapes.

Lifeflix, a Mac Softare for rescuing old Video 8 etc tapes available in the Apple APP store must be concerned if a fix is not imminent. I am a big iMovie user and hopefully a fix will happen and I will not have to return to Big Sur.

Updated iMovie and Final Cut Pro AND the Pro Videos codecs, and the issue is still there. Definitely something with Mac OS 12.3(.1).
