I just realized I can't import my movies to my new project in Imovie'08. I have some videos in my computer I shot using my digital camera & the file format for those is .AVI but also with another digital camera I have videos with .MPG format. Apparently Imovie accepts .AVI but not .MPG. This is a very important personal project consisting of pictures & movies that I'm making for sister-in-law surprise birthday party & I have a week left to finish the video but I don't how. I searched for an MPG to AVI converter but couldn't found any freeware. Any suggestions for me?

Much depends on if it's MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. Does it open in Quicktime player?

If yes, use MPEG Streamclip to export to DV.

If no, you'll either have to get the (for-pay) MPEG-2 component from Apple and use MPEG Streamclip, or use another application like ffmpegX to convert to a format iMovie can handle.
