Any way to increase the resolution of the MBA in leopard beyond what is allowed in preferences? Any third party apps?

The max resolution your computer can display is hardware limited, not software.
It's like asking for a software update that will make your hard drive bigger.

Leopard was supposed to have a "resolution independence" feature that would let you change the DPI of the UI, but I'm not sure what happened to that.

You could fake it in XP, as that OS supports scaling DPI below 100%. Vista supports scaling above, but not below 100%. OS X, needless to say, doesn't support scaling in either direction.

that would've been a great feature. i wonder if they're gonna add it through a software update or if they just scrapped it. if it's the latter, i'm mad!

Leopard has some support for resolution independence; no applications take advantage of it right now, though.
