Instagram today announced the launch of a new "Type" mode in stories, a feature that the company was previously testing with a small number of users.

Type mode is designed to allow Instagram users to share text-only posts in Instagram Stories, and the feature is similar in design to the Facebook option that lets you accentuate text-only posts with large fonts and colorful backgrounds.

According to Instagram, Type uses creative text styles and backgrounds to allow users to turn their "most random thoughts into something colorful and expressive."

Type mode can be accessed by opening up the Instagram Stories camera and selecting "Type" next to normal under the record button.
Tap "Type" and write whatever comes to mind -- your favorite lyrics, a silly thought or a random idea -- and play with different styles to change the look and feel. Then, you can pick different background colors, highlight words and phrases or add a background photo.
The new styles introduced with the Type feature can also be used when adding text to any photo or video, and as with all Stories posts, content will disappear after 24 hours.

Type content is part of Instagram version 30 for iOS, which can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I certainly have noticed myself spending more time viewing Instagram stories of the people I follow than Snapchat stories. Granted I spend more time in the Instagram app than I do Snapchat anyway.

Not for me. I hate Instagram stories and still prefer Snapchat. I don't want to use an apps feature that blatantly and shamelessly copied another's anyway.

Then you better get rid of whatever smartphone you have because Android copied iOS and iOS copied Android. Better get rid of your car too because it's a blatant and shameless copy of the same design others created nearly 100 years ago.

I guess I just don’t like Mark Zuckerberg and his relentless need to take over everything social media. That’s not a monopoly I want. Couldn’t buy Snapchat which is why I have so much respect for them for refusing his offer, so instead copied them by shoving it in every single app he owns (WhatsApp, Facebook, Insta), the first two are a joke but fortunately for him the latter stuck. I’m not using anything that guy has his hands on. Snapchats filters and overall fun/cool factor are still miles ahead, at least for me and many others I know.

That's awesome for you. Glad you like it. Snap is struggling. They're headed in a very very bad direction and can't seem to figure things out. If this keeps up, they're going to have some serious issues very soon. Instagram is eating their lunch and they've been left scratching their heads as they try to figure out how to save their sinking ship.

So much for 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. This platform is evolving into a re-skinned Facebook clone:

  • Unchronological feed order? Check.
  • Persistent ads and follow suggestions in your feed? Check.
  • Random features added to promote quantity over quality posts? Check.
  • Users complaining their posts aren't reaching followers? Check.
  • (Talk of) Spinning off messaging into a separate app? Check?
  • Spend more time scrolling through posts and unfollowing people than enjoying the content? Check.
