Truly amazing the verbal gymnastics that continue day after day.

Trump says he knows Whitaker well a month ago. The other day - says he doesn't know him.
KAC goes on FOX and says Trump has known Whitaker for a year now. But you know - what Trump meant is that he wasn't appointing or knew him for his whole life/years.

If Trump wants his "favorable" coverage - perhaps he should stop lying. Because the press is going to fact check him - that's their job.

I think some of our fellow posters have made it clear, fact checking counts as picking on 45 as well.

You mean the enemy of the people spreading fake news?

I'm facetious, of course, but it's frustrating how disproportionately more time it takes to refute his lies and to get people to care than it is to just lie. He'd know, he does it thirty times a day without even trying.

It's troubling to see Trump's mantra about "fake news!" continuing in the face of redoubled efforts on fact checking by the press. A lot of the papers now have even taken to providing mini-CVs of the contributors of reporting for each piece. They're out there now every day on every article by name and professional bio.

Yet Trumps fans get to slide by, often in anonymity, simply libeling all reporters of mainstream outlets as purveyors of fake news. And they follow Trump's lead in tagging mainstream press as enemy of the people.

One wonders if they will ever see that "real news" cannot reliably come from a podium behind which Trump or any other autocrat stands, which is why countries with representative governments have a Fourth Estate to begin with.

The press isn't the enemy. The press is charged with helping the people ascertain enough information to prevent the government from becoming the enemy.

Or maybe as with some other issues, Trump's followers don't really give the "free press" issue a lot of thought, so what they say is just what he says to say.

Why then do we hear the right in these boards sometimes speak of the left as "sheeple" when it's Trump's fans absorbing and re-cycling his authoritarian pronouncements as if to do anything else amounts to heresy? Who will sound a wakeup call these duped souls finally hear? Trump himself, maybe... in some monstrous lie not even his most faithful candle-holder can swallow. But one begins to wonder what that could even be. The guy prevaricates as if it will be out of style by nightfall, day after day.

Well, ultimately it's what 45 wants. When people say the press shouldn't cover 45, I say loudly 'NO'! 45 wants to operate in a vacuum with no one but his followers looking on. That's why 45 needs to carry on his favorite past time of tearing down the press. If the press won't stop watching him, 45 needs his followers not watching the press.

Well, in fairness, the idea that the press should abandon the White House press conference isn't that the press should let him operate in a vacuum, rather that allowing the president to lie and obfuscate and browbeat these professionals on camera isn't helping viewers understand the White House, or the president. So, rather than letting the circus go on, abandon the press conferences and spend more time and resources on running down the AMI story, or Whitaker's con job, or Zinke's spending.

Or, as Jay Rosen put it last year, send in the interns, and let them learn on the job.

The biggest problem with this idea, in my opinion, is that while many outlets could leave, Fox News and whatever tin-pot blogger they let in, will continue to attend the press conferences. So, we'll end up with Trump getting asked what's his favorite color from the morons at Gateway Pundit.

The real danger isn't the vacuum, rather sycophantic coverage.
