Mail was working well in iOS 16 on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Since upgrading to iOS 16.1 though, frequently when I tap on a mail notification in the Lock Screen, mail opens and just hangs there unresponsive for 5 seconds or so before I can interact with it. I doesn’t go to the message I tapped. After that it’s okay as long as I don’t open a bunch of other apps. It I do it hangs again.

Yep. I got the same new problem. 'Loading' message appears. Nothing to do with indexing and everything to do with 1, shoddy work from the self proclaimed 'greatest tech company ever', 2, deliberate - so they can railroad you into another feature on 16.1.1. and fix the 'loading' issue. Yawn... Apple's BS.

Turns out it’s not just Mail. A number of apps appear to hang on launch for awhile as if there’s not enough memory to launch them. That started in iOS 16.1.

Try waiting a few days. Reason: sometimes iOS "reindexes" itself and causes system slowdowns that can last a day or more.
It's been more than a few days now. In MacMail I'm seeing old 'sent' emails at the top of my 'in' box. Which means sometihing is going on in the background that I am not privy to. Seems re-indexing, but not in any professional sense. However, I am wholly unconcerned by it, but it does reinforce my oft proven casual view that Apple are not above being deliberately sloppy and deliberately devious. Looking forward to the update 'fix' containing a new feature I do not want. Long live Apple!
