I installed iOS 16 public beta last night and so far all my main apps work and my battery life was fine today.

My question is how will I know when there is an update to the public beta. Will it show up on my phone automatically under software updates? Will I have to install something from the Apple website again?

Yes, it will show the same as an update on a release version

After updating to iOS 16 beta, how was your battery life while doing your daily tasks or using it after many hours?
It was in use all day. I listened to my audiobook at work all day and even on my lunch break. And the usual checking of email, Facebook and YouTube, banking apps, etc. during the day.
And than I am on YouTube and Facebook after work until bed. It was at 63% when I went to bed.
I thought that was pretty good.

I find out by checking MacRumors haha. Usually Apple releases a new beta version every two weeks until about a month before release (typically until early to mid-August) and then it’s usually a new version every week until the final release.
