Over recent years I have usually owned both a droid and an iDevice and switched betweem them, usually that meant most time on the iPhone but over recent years that balance has shifted towards android and it got me thinking as to why that happened. iOS has always frustrated a little from the uniform home screen that you cannot change (better now but still not great) to the bluetooth audio being constrained to 250kbs, no always on display or the 2 stage unlock process that was a step back speed wise from a FPS and is even more annoying with a mask added into the mix.

I accepted though that Apple would rather sell me an apple watch than give me an always on display and would rather keep things simple for the majority of users who do no care about things like high quality audio or being able to customise their home screen, hell my Mum does not even use face unlock as she does not understand it and prefers to put a pin in!

So I always went in with my eyes open and lets be fair lots of stuff has improved, provided you do not care about how sharp a photo of a street sign is from 5 miles away then I think the iPhone has the best camera for both stills or video out there, the hardware remains terrific and they are not even stupidly more expensive than rivals anymore. My issue though is that in addition to the niggles mentioned above I think that iOS is now both badly designed and buggy and I am at the point where I genuinely do not enjoy using it anymore. Here are some examples of what I mean....

- Notifications are terrible and badges are buggy. Notifications have never been great on iOS and it has always been the case that clearing the notification and associated badge requires 2 steps but the badges are infuriating and on a daily basis now I go into the app to I think clear the badge only for it still to be there when I exit the app so it is a case of rinse and repeat

- The general UI is buggy. With a full home screen if I want to move an app about or move an app from the app library into a folder on my home screen then EVERY time the bottom right app on the home screen moves to the 2nd page and I have to move it back manually.

- The design is lazy. You could park a bus in the gap between the dock and first row of icons, I mean who at apple thought that was a good idea? Seriously if you cannot get the layout symetical then at least put any gap at the top where it matters less. We already lose a ton of screen real estate due to the notch and swipe area at the bottom.

- Accessing control centre and switching your phone off still feels way more complicated than it should andf if I take another accidental screenshot trying I might just lose it!

- Having to go to two places to change the lockscreen widgets depending on what type of widget it is well just a 🤦‍♂️

- Gone are the days of apps being almost always better on iOS and I am finding so many buggy apps now, from my shopping app not being able to cope with 2FA forcing me to the web page or to Newton Mail being 6 hours behind, Sonos not finding my speakers or Facebook often loading with no content requiring exit and reload and that is just off the top of my head.

- Maybe it is the lack of a high refresh rate, maybe over-bearing animations or just the OS in general but it all feels so slow too. Now I know the current iPhones are the very opposite of slow and benchmark off of the charts but in general navigation I think they feel it, almost like scrolling through treacle at times.

- Pulse Width Modulation causing headaches. This is a definiate thing, fortuneately does not affect me massively but I do notice it if I use the phone for any extended time like reading an article or something.

Now I realise this post will have people sharpening pitchforks to defend Tim and co but honestly I am at the point where I just do not think I want to use it anymore, it is just a bad OS IMO. It feels like they have just continued to build on top of springboard over and over rather than build a new OS from the ground up and the cracks are starting to show and in places it just feels really dated.

Not intending to inflame just curious to see if it is only me who feels this way??

I agree with everything you said and I still prefer to use iOS over Android, and that's coming from someone who used the S21 Ultra for 2 months and thinks it's the best phone I've ever used.

The S21 ultra is my current droid and it is really really good. If it had pixel or oxygen os it would be even better.

I am struggling to think of anything I prefer about iOS right now TBH, maybe iMessage, maybe airdrop, maybe better camera integration with 3rd party apps?

For me, it was the little annoyances of messages randomly not being sent, or trying to share videos between my iPhone friends. And yes, I like the camera integration better, plus faster shutter speed. I like not having duplicate apps and still feel like iOS does apps a little better, not a lot anymore, but still a little better. Just the little things. The polish. Like why can't the ESPN app have dark mode or scroll at 120hz while the rest of the phone can. It's smoother on my 60hz iPhone screen. Just one of many small examples.

Freaking loved the S21 Ultra though. I was a bit sad when I sold it.

Apple has deprecated the code necessary to create the old “Today” widget style and my guess is this goes away by iOS 15.

Integrating a new WidgetKit widget with an app correctly/sustainably isn’t quite as straightforward as the old way, so I can get why they might not have wanted to kill off old widgets quite yet when iOS 14 shipped in September.

A pixel or Oneplus has very few of those issues. There was a time when almost every app was way better on iOS but not anymore.

Tis a good point that not all android apps support 90 or 120 hz or dark mode, most will pretty soon though.

I know it’s cliche but I’m honestly not sure SJ would have tolerated iOS in it’s current form, it has fallen below what I think are Apple’s high standards. It no longer ‘just works’ imo.

I think when it comes down to operating systems, it's less about if it "just works" and more of it it works right for you. For me, iOS just organizes my life better and I really missed that on Android. But again, I think both are pretty close to equal at this point.

I agree with you on a lot of things and I do find it silly that we have to use a certain combination of buttons just to turn our phone off. (Yes, I know there’s an easier way in settings but still. What happened to just one button for powering off and on? And I also know how Apple is about it not being necessary to turn our phones off.)

It's working great for me, why not wait until 14.5 and see if any of the bugs you have vanish.

Having come from Android, FroYo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb (on my Zoom), Ice Cream Sandwich and Jellybean (before I switched starting with iOS 9) I have found iOS a pleasure to use and so much simpler than Android.

Are there bugs? Sure there are.
Are there odd annoyances? Totally.

Do I regret changing? No.
Can I see myself going back anytime soon? Nope.

Since my first purchase (iPad Pro 9.3) I've gone all in with two MacBook Pros, my 7+, 3 Apple Watches, AirPods and and Apple TV.

The tight integration between the devices makes it so easy to pass things from one device to another and my 7+ is a solid little performer.

What combination of buttons ? I only press one, the one named power off.

Or are you talking about hard reset ?

Your not wrong, but you missed the 2 biggest annoyances for me.
The file manager/share is still comically bad.
Background apps suspend way too quick, breaking open network connections
I mean, you still can’t search for contacts with T9

so I have been android primarily since iPhone 4, but, I had a 5, 6, and X. In fact I still have them in a drawer, but they were garbage and I only used them for a couple months.
The 12 pro max is the first iPhone have stuck with since the 4.

so while all you said is true, I honestly feel like iOS is catching up. The gap is smaller.

It looks like your device is having issues. Try fresh install first. I hope it can change your opinion (most annoying issue on me is buggy / slow UI & notification). You can also try using other iCloud account to test the stability. Mine have been speedy and almost zero issues (iPhone 6s, SE, new SE, 7, iPad Air 3).

Yeah didn’t mention these as they are a given.

Want to download a load of music? Be ready to continuously keep your device awake manually while it downloads. RUBBISH.

File manager has again been either embarrassing or non existent so far.

iOS/iPadOS Bad???????

when a secure OS which focuses on ones privacy and security, an OS which the GOAT iOS/iPadOS device the iPad Air 2 is being supported more than any Android phone and an OS capable of supporting the oldest hardware (iPad Mini 4) compared to the latest Android OS and older Android devices supporting it and I see a thread which says it’s bad 🤦‍♂️

yes it has its issues, file manager being the worst because It’s still not user friendly, yes people wish for more features since Android has a few things that iOS lacks but it’s nowhere near bad at all

Completely agree with the OP.

Without question the reliability and stability of iOS has gone down the pan the last few years IMO. The ongoing bugs which are still not fixed year after year is ever increasing. Siri is crap, mail synchronisation on the Apple watch is crap, HomeKit is slow and unreliable, dictation and AutoCorrect is buggy. The always on altimeter in the series 6 watch doesn’t work correctly in low pressure, I mean how the hell did that pass testing?

The fit and polish that we used to expect and indeed received with iOS has long gone. And whether it will come back or not I don’t know.

This is the same as me. I switched from a Galaxy S6 to the iPhone 8 Plus and fell in love with it immediately. No way would I go back to Android. I’ve since been completely sucked in to the Apple ecosystem and absolutely love it.

Being fully invested in Apple, the best way is to download on your MacBook and upload to your Apple Music library. With Android, sure, the file manager is better, but every try messing with an id tag on a music file that just doesn’t want to cooperate? And then your album is all mixed up?

sure it’s more money but well worth it if your Music library is important to you.

The problem is Apple have tried to shoehorn in so many features and extras that it has become necessarily complex. The days of a simple device with a simple, easy to use OS have long gone. It is indeed annoying to use, buggy and unwieldy. I don't know where they go from here tbh. I can only see them adding more functionality in a bid to keep getting users to buy another phone, year after year...
