Hi, is there a way to get it done cheaper than $249 Apple charges? Are there kits or other stores that do it cheaper?

Yes, many repair centers replace iPhone/ipad screens. But be careful about this. I just got an iPad mini 2 screen replaced for $99 ($108 incl tax) versus Apple $199 but it wasn't that great. The home button sank a few weeks later.

Then I dropped it again! and when I looked into repair, I discovered that the after market screens that most buy are too thick and the home button sinking is common. I don't know about the mini vs Air 2.

if you just break the glass and digitizer underneath, it can be cheaper. If the underlying LCD is broken, that will be expensive and you might be better off with Apple (I think you can tell LCD is broken if lines are wavy).

One bad thing about iPads is that they can break easier than Macs and that cost should be factored in. I bought the apple care plus on my Air 2 (so $150 all in to replace a cracked screen) but didn't buy on the mini 2 as I thought that technology was older and good chance I might want to upgrade two years later (still I tried anyway with the repair shop).

Yes you can get the screen fixed for less then $250 I found a repair company online that fixed my ipad pro 12.9 screen and just got a newsletter from them that they are now fixing the ipad air 2 glass only, from what i've read on there site your LCD has to be good. They say they are offering this repair for $150 and pay shipping both ways. They did a great job on my pro I'm sure they'll do great on the air 2. iMaster Repair

You can buy a secondhand iPad Air 2 off eBay for around $160 and call it a day, then you can sell your broken one for $60. It’s much more cost effective especially when we’re talking about a 4 years old tablet.

The 2nd option is to go to some local repair shop in your area, where you can get iPad Air 2 repaired for a better price deal.

The 3rd best option is to get a high-quality replacement LCD Screen with touch digitizer for iPad Air 2 from a reliable online store and get it fitted from the local repair shop. This way you will get a good quality display screen with good prices and reliable warranty. You can even try to do this yourself with the help of YouTube video and phone opening tool kit for iPad Air 2.

As per my research, iPad Air 2 screen replacement should cost something around $65.00 in the USA.

Not an iPad repair, but my experience with 3rd party iPhone repairs has been pretty hit and miss. Sometimes sub-par screens and sub-par reliability.

Another consideration is to buy the iPad 7th generation if you can stretch your budget somewhat.

Although it’s not a laminated screen, in most other respects the iPad 7 is quite a big upgrade over the iPad Air 2. I compared the iPad 7 side by side with my iPad Pro 10.5” here:

iPad Air 2 displays are laminated (combined glass/lcd) and used to cost $299 to repair. Within the last 6 months that price has come down to as low as $135, but more typically in the $199 range.

Please share your research: my cost for just the air 2 glass is $69, add in an hourly wage and I do not see how anyone can do it for $65.00. If you can find them let me know, I'll happily send my repairs their way and pay shipping.

So there's no digitizer?
The digitizer is technically a separate component. The industry often refers to the digitizer: the glass and touch assembly as a single unit. I should have used digitizer in the post above.

Technically you can repair an iPad Air 2 glass without purchasing a new lcd. It requires specialized equipment that most people and most shops choose not to purchase ( cost of specialized equipment Vs US labor price [hourly wage/time used] is a loss for laminated glass repair - iPad Air 2 & iPad Pros ).
