Score the new layout. Widgets and apps. There are lots of negative vibes here, to which I would add my own. It’s a lazy implementation, with loads of wasted space (12.9 user). Anybody like it? And why?

2 out of 10 from me.

Umm… if I had to score it, I’ll tally it 7 out of 10. Perhaps, I’m enamored with the fact I can move widgets around freely. I think if Apple was to give users the option to choose between iPadOS 14 layout or current implementation… it would eliminate those who criticize all the wasted space.

But having only widgets on my HomeScreen… my most used apps on the dock along with the new App Library with a swipe away (or on the dock). I like the HomeScreen for iPadOS… if I could request a feature for it, make the widgets more interactive. Perhaps, that’s on of iOS/iPadOS 16.

Unrelated to this topic… I wonder when Apple starts breaking away from the numbering, iOS 38 naming seems abnormal.

I love it, because I am embracing filling my homescreen with stacks of widgets, and they don’t look out of place on an 11” iPad Pro.

I do wish the widgets could be more customisable though, like being able to control music playback directly via the widget, rather than it simply being an app launcher.

Try the Shortcuts app. It’s easy to build a little music shortcut widget to play playlists or albums. I have a little stack of these.

One screen of widgets and one screen of apps seems to be the way to go at the moment.

Thanks. I do have one on my first page for quick access to playlists. Perhaps it’s time to look at expanding it to music and podcasts playback as well.

How you do that one that looks like a bigger folder with apps in it?

Yep these widgets really need to be interactive, at the moment most widgets are basically just a bigger version of the apps we already have on our Home Screen.

Guessing the 16gb ram in these M1 iPads isn't enough for interactive widgets, maybe that'l happen once they get 32gb ram. 🤔😂

It’s a launcher app widget.

Alternatively, Siri suggestion widget can also accomplish something along that line. 8 apps for the space of 2 app icons, but you don’t get to control what gets shown, though it has been pretty accurate for me.

Well, I don't fill my entire HomeScreen... but only widgets go on it. But what's with the Android shortcut? What does that do?

That’s the widget for Apollo, a reddit client. Those are basically shortcuts that bring me to specific subreddits. So Android takes me to the android reddit.

Which application does give you the word suggestion "cupidity"?
Thanks in advance

That's just the Siri Suggestions widget. But don't get your hopes anywhere near up. It isn't a customisable launcher. The apps are forever changing because it's AI (ha-ha) is (allegedly) based on your app usage (aka totally random).

iPadOS should’ve gotten the ability to freely move around widgets and icons, as it’s supposed to be a “laptop”.
Also, having folders on the home screens would’ve been a game changer. Or, at least as a shortcut of a folder within finder.

Nobody actually uses widgets. You think they would be useful, but they are a waste of space when you think how much you actually benefit from them. This whole 'try to become more like Android' trend in Apple products is awful.

For widgets to work, they need to be interactive, imagine scrolling through your playlist widget on the Home Screen or contacts, mail and so on, at the moment they’re just a bigger version of the apps we have on our Home Screen already. 🤦‍♂️

Just give us the option to pick the old or the new style... the new one is ok for some, for me, iOS 14 homepage was better!

Siri Shortcuts. Or the Files widget.

I removed every widget from the "Home Screen" immediately and moved them to the left hand side but now I am stuck with that annoying grid and I hate it. I cannot believe we are on iOS 15 and Apple still does not let us adjust the size and placement of the home screen ourselves. Does android have a patent that apple does not want pay for or something???

Sorry, just saw the message.

I am using a dictionary app called lookup. The widget has a "word of the day" option.
