Probably pretty obvious but beware. My 9th Gen handled 16 well but it’s slow and laggy on 17. Hoping it gets better.

Edited the title for easier searches.

Hmm, my observation is that both my 2018 iPad Pro and my 9th gen iPad feel smoother on iOS 17 (with the iPad Pro seeing more noticeable performance improvements). Apps seem to launch slightly faster, safari seems to load more quickly, I am digging the new animations for notifications and the whole system just feels better optimised overall.

My problem is that iPadOS 17.0 is not that well-suited for Touch ID iPads (I own a 2017-model iPad Pro 10.5" Pro). It feels like iPadOS now is better suited for the Face ID iPad Pro models.
iPadOS 16 received many complaints on the home button iPad Pros, both in terms of performance and battery life.

How’s iPadOS 17 running on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro?

Yep, the App Switcher is stuttering on my iPad Pro 10.5”, like ProMotion is getting disabled.
I’ve submitted a bug report to Apple. Hopefully gets fixed in next update.
How’s battery life and how is it running overall?

Safari is bad, scrolling is extra laggy and the app switcher feels stuttery. Glad others have noticed better performance. I did a wipe and reinstall hoping that helps.

Is the 2018 iPad Pro the 10.5 model, because that's what I have and I'm wondering if I should go iPadOS17 or not and whether it will ruin that tablet?

So yours is newer than the 10.5 Pro and iPadOS17 is running poorly on yours? Doesn't sound god for my 10.5...
I don’t have iPadOS 17 on the only iPad I have that supports it, the Air 5. I never recommend updating, but perhaps you can get some insight from somebody who runs iPadOS 17 on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Battery life wasn’t great on iPadOS 16 as far as I’ve read, maybe it’s pushing it too far.

Feels quick and stick on my M1 Air, slightly but noticeably better than iPadOS 16. To be honest I’m not seeing a huge difference in terms of features, although two things are definitely better: autocorrect is great (rather than annoying), and one feature I’ve discovered that I didn’t read about is that you can completely disable the multi-window modes. Options are now Off, Split View & Slideover, Stagemanager. I’ve never got on with any of the multiscreen modes but would often accidentally activate them by pressing the three dots at the top of the screen, finally they are gone!

I'm on 6th gen, iPadOS 17 Notes very slow to load especially on lengthy entries... It takes a second or 2 to load vs iPadOS 16 which is almost instantaneous...

Was hoping for a beta 17.1 to try out soon before the window to downgrade to 16.7 closes...

iPadOS 17.0.1 hasn’t fixed this.

Please submit bug reports to https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/ for App Switcher stuttering if you have this issue.

So the App Switcher stuttering on my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” is caused by the new default wallpaper. Change to any other wallpaper and animations are nice and smooth again.

Why this wallpaper causes the GPU to bog down I have no idea, guess it’s a UI bug.

Seems that I made the right decision sticking with
iPadOS 13 - iPad 6
iPadOS 15 - iPad 9

I have iOS 17 on my 10.5 Pro and my 12.9 Pro. Both feel smoother than with iOS 16. No stutters or other glitches. Both have been on 17 since the first developer beta. Super impressed.

Have you tried the new default wallpaper with depth effect enabled? This is what causes stuttering on my 10.5” iPad Pro.
Otherwise I agree with you, iPadOS 17 seems faster than 16.

Nope. My wallpapers are unchanged since my iPad 3 Retina.

Same here, iPad Pro 10,5" and it's all working smoothly, I don't see any issues. Everything just seems the same. Hopefully this is a good stability update, looking solid so far. I don't even see small stutters that you'd usually get here and there after a major update.

No, but I tried it now. Stuttering all over the place. When I revert to my usual wallpaper for the last couple of years, all fine.

You're good, it's Apple doing its magic with the default BS.
