iphone 3g charging issue

hi well my dad has a ipod cable in his truck to connect to his radio. it wont charge my iphone 3g or my new ipod nano, is there any type of fix for this or what? i love apple but i dont understand why they continue to screw us over into buying new stuff and then its not compatable with anything and you have to restart.. i dont understand.
