if I have an iPhone 4 that won't turn on or be recognized in iTunes.. how would the apple store find out the serial # to see if it's in warranty or what size it is? would they open it up and check?

This might be a dumb question, tried resetting it?

tried everything I could, I don't think it got wet (though it might be a SLIGHT possibility) and not sure if it has something to do with the extreme temperatures...

might have been my fault, left it wrapped up in a black shirt in direct sunlight (100+degree weather) for many many hours (fell asleep in the pool :( )

and yes, it has had ample time to cool down and is no longer hot, just won't do anything

The serial number is on the SIM card tray.

They'll figure it out. They generally don't service the phone unless you have a SIM card with it (which means you would need the tray). Otherwise, they may just ask for the box or proof of purchase. Worst case scenario, maybe it's inside the phone as well.
