Check on ebay.
They got tons of iphone IMEI unlock services. The prices are decent too.

Wouldnt you have to be still actiavted on your original carrier for them to work? I mean how does it work otherwise? How does your iPhone know its unlocked?

Nope, doesnt need to be activate on any account.
All you do is give them your phones IMEI and they add it to Apples unlocked database somehow.
Next you restore with itunes and your iphone is officially unlocked.
Some sellers can only do AT&T iphones or other companies so you gotta ask them and let them know what network your iphone is locked to in order to make sure they can do it.

There are lots of unofficial ways. Their credibility and reliability seem to be sketchy, but people that use these services seem to never complain. Check out AppleBerry or PhoneMedic.

I'd imagine because official unlocking through carriers, such as AT&T, is a recent process, so they are too confused to realize what's officially and what's unofficially unlocked. My gut tells me they will catch up to this sooner or later, but by that point your 2 years are up and the phones contractually unlock-able anyways ;)

on AT&T, you will need to activate it first.
Some people complained that they're stuck on activation though they've been successfully unlocked the iPhone via iTunes.

I don't know about carriers on UK.

Most providers gives you estimate 3-10 business days, you may PM me if you need shorter timeframe -- 12-72 hours.

That screen only comes up the first time ever that particular iphone is activated on a customers account when received through the mail or in store subsidized.
After that you never need the last 4 of the account holders social or billing zip to activate when restoring or updating firwmare.

question about AT&T unlocking...if i port the number away, effectively terminating the account and paying the ETF, will they unlock my phone then?

Is there a way to tell if my iPhone has successfully been unlocked? I'm getting ready to sell my iPhone 4 and I've supposedly unlocked my phone through AT&T. I don't know how to test if it was successful though.
