bought a new iphone 5C toady, comes with the wall charger but alos want to be able to charge it in my truck, i have a charger i bought off amazon for my macbook pro and it has a usb port, its a spal 85w car adapter and had great reviews. ofcourse the people at at&t said i could fry my phone with anything other than a apple charger. true / false ?
.0001 percent chance that might happen and even if it does, an apple charger wouldn't help. At&t just wanted more money out of you. I'm estimating the chargers at atnt are about 30 dollars, go buy yourself nice 10 dollar iphone charger but make sure it's compatible with the iphone 5, also don't go all out cheap and buy a .50 cent charger on ebay those will mostly not charge your phone and if they do they will break within a week.
Any USB port should be outputting 5v and between 500 mah and 2A. As long as it's a good brand name I wouldn't worry about using it. The casing should declare the USB output somewhere.
