did they completely redesign the otterbox for iphone 5 in terms of aesthetics?

the iphone 4s defender used to have a texturized back it also had a slip resistant grip.

the new iphone 5 defender is not texturized on the back and is made of a different material.

did i get sent the wrong product or did otterbox redesign the case?

It's a redesigned case, different shell material. I actually like it for going in a pocket and not stretching out. I posted in another thread about how quickly mine showed dirt after 1 day of use, your mileage may vary.

It is totally redesigned and MUCH better than the previous model. The rubber silicone case is more oil resistant and does not suck in oil from your hands and face and that is why I hated the old rubber case because it feels slimy and gross after too much handling. I have the red (outer)/black (inner) otterbox and it is great!!! It feels so much better in your hands and the silicone does not feel like it is going to tear when taking it off. I actually had a grey one (old style) for my 4s and the rubber tore when I took it off! Really! So yeah, I think it MUCH better!

The otterbox is too big for the pocket. Your going to wear it out putting it in there. You don't like the clip it came with? What color did you get that shows dirt? Take the silicone case off and get some soap and water after it and this will keep it clean.

Actually, it fits just fine in my pocket. I wear dress slacks most of the time in a corporate setting, and have no issue with it fitting in my pocket. I just don't really care for the clip, but do use it on occasion.

Here is my post with pictures of the issue. No luck with soap, water, or alcohol. I noted in the follow thread that it could be a chance manufacturing issue (the case with issues was made in Mexico, while a replacement in a different color was made in China), or simply the nature of a white case. I just think it’s interesting that the problem is only on the edges and not the flat surfaces.

Like I said, your mileage may vary… I can tell you that my Defender 4/4S (in white) never exhibited this issue. I like the material of the new version much better, but there is something with the edges that isn’t right.
