My country supports 4G LTE, but just different type of it.
The country where I live in, provides lte in 800 and 2,600mhz, thats band 20 and band 38.
And the iPhone 5 GSM Model A1428 support only bands 4 (AWS) and 17 (700b MHz). And the GSM Model A1429 support bands 1 (2100 MHz), 3 (1800 MHz) and 5 (850 MHz.

Would it still work if the LTE chip is slightly different than the service?

Unfortunately, no. :( It should still work for 3G though.

Maybe check if your carrier supports HSPA+ or DC-HSDPA? They still provide good speeds, even though they're not 4G LTE.
