iPhone 7 is metal back while the 8 is glass, isn’t that a step backwards ?

It’s easy as hell to shatter or scratch, metal phones are way more durable and feel better in the hands and don’t get full of finger prints.

Did Apple take a step backwards in design?

I don't think it's a step backwards as much as it's a return to the well.

The 4/4s worked out well for Apple. Perhaps they think going with that design will work for them a second time.

The glass should make it less slippery so less likely to drop it

They couldn't do wireless charging with the back being metal. That's why it's now glass.

Isn’t the glass supposed to be better for wireless charging as well?

Inductive charging doesn't work with metal. Anything else would though.

Whatever happened to the liquid metal glass back that we heard about years ago? Now that’d be a step up.

As far as breakage goes, if you’ve never broken your screen, then chances are very good that you won’t break the back. Plus there are always cases for those who want wireless charging but feel they are too clumsy, like me. :D

What's funny is when Apple went from the glass back to the metal, everyone said it was way better.

The opposite seems to be true, once you get a few smudges on the glass from your fingers it becomes extremely slippery.

It's very well knows the 8 and X will use glass, where have you been?

It's more of a side-step than a step backwards or forwards. Just different materials, but not objectively "better" or "worse". Most of the reviewers have stated it looks and feels "better", but the same thing happened when they went to metal. As pointed out, the main advantage of going with glass is that wireless charging will work. Possibly, the phone may get better reception as well, but that's just speculation. I think it'll be a bit grippier to hold onto for the most part, but that my dependent more on the person's hands than anything else. I don't think having a glass back is going to make that much difference if you drop the phone... dropping it onto a hard surface is going to have major ramifications either way (front or back). Apple claims it is the toughest glass yet on a Smartphone, but that'll have to be tested (scratches will probably be about the same, but it's more shatterproof, that'll be an improvement).

It’s entirely subjective but personally I’m happy with the change. I always preferred the glass design of the iPhone 4/4s to what followed. In my eyes it looks and feels more premium than the aluminium we have on the 7.

As the owner of a 6s, I’m happy with changing to glass. No more antenna glass. I use a case just to hide them

I Actually think the glass backing will provide more of a grip for peoples hands, as the 7000 series aluminum is fairly slippery in the hand at times.
