It is that time of year again. I am sad to report that my efforts to pre-order an iPhone 7 were not successful. I attempted the pre-order the exact moment it launched and the shipping dates had already slipped to 2 to 3 weeks. I guess it is time to do another overnighter or two.

I have been the first in line at the Clarendon location for the last 5 years. However, they are closed during the launch this year for renovations. I was hoping the renovations at Clarendon would be completed in time for the launch but I have confirmed that this will not be the case.

Has anyone camped out at the Potomac Town Center location during previous launches? What is the earliest that security allows you to get in line? I know during last year's launch, security forced people were in line too early to leave. They told them to come back at a specific time. When they returned at the time specified by security, there were already about 20 people in line. I want to avoid this situation if possible.

Wanted to bump this thread because this is probably the location I'll choose to camp at.

I'm going to arrive sometime around 7-8pm Thursday night. Bringing a chair/comfy one.

iPad. Charger for iPad. With movies.
A small cooler with snacks inside.

If anyone else wants to join in we should probably bring some sort of games

That is a great plan. The problem is... Potomac Town Center security is not allowing anyone to camp out. They told me that they are not allowing anyone to be there until 5:00 AM which coincides with the time that Starbucks opens.

The problem with obeying their 5:00 AM rule is that if anyone gets there at, let's say 4:00 AM, and security doesn't make their next round until 5:00 AM, there will be people there ahead of you. This is what happened the last two years. People were told to leave and then when they came back at 5:00 AM, there were already people in front of them. These people must have slipped in after the last security check but before the next one at 5:00 AM. Risky if you truly want to have the best shot at getting the specific phone you want.

Everything I have read indicates stock at launch is going to be extremely limited this year. Apple was not ready for the number of pre-orders they received and stock levels for walk-ins will be low. Only since the Samsung Note 7 recall did Apple try to ramp up production to meet the new demand created by the recall. Also, now we are dealing with Apple pulling phones from in store stock for people who are part of the Apple upgrade program who were shafted during the preorder. This is stock that would have been available for people like you and me who want to camp out.

I truly think stock is going to be tightest it has been in years. This is why I want to go somewhere that I am guaranteed to not be chased away by security and that ensures that if I am first in line, there is no chance someone sneaked in from another mall entrance.

Wtf?? They won't let people camp ? Man. That totally bonks that then. I've already said this. I'm not putting forth any effort if the power players aren't on board. And yes people will totally sneak in and steal a spot

What about Reston ? Will security kick people out I wonder ? It's more city based at Reston.

Can you try to find out ?

Computermilk was talking about potentially doing Reston. I can't call because I'm at work, if anyone has a moment, do they mind checking in with Reston and seeing what the consensus is there please?

I'm guessing it's the Shopping center security, which apple will have no control over.

Reston might be a better bet because it's not a shopping center, it's more of a city (would be kind of like NYC) i'm guessing the only people who would be able to enforce you to leave would be the city police off from the sidewalk in front of the apple store, I'm still not going unless we confirm it though.

I can call this evening if anyone can point me in the right direction. Not really sure who would make sense to call for Reston.

I called the Apple Store earlier and spoke to a
specialist - she was pretty much clueless. Her response was that I could lineup as early as I wanted. I knew this was a dead end call so I did not press the conversation further.
What is truly disappointing is the lack of communication between Apple management and its employees.

Apple knows this question is asked every year. Yet they make no effort to communicate with security ahead of time nor communicate this information to employees. They have a kickoff meeting before every employee starts his or shift. It would be easy for them to tell employees how to respond to these types of questions.

    I am very disappointed.

Thanks for doing this. Want me to try tomorrow? See if we can get a more informed employee or manager to answer it?

    Good Day,

We are not allowing folks to line up any earlier than 5 am which is the time that Starbucks opens for business.

Man I swear like. Times have really changed. And no offense btw to anyone I'm of course generalizing...but the average low income worker now. It's like they aren't even self aware. Or they don't even have the drive to have common sense anymore.

Not you I'm sorry! I should add some more context I also called the mall security at fair oaks mall and the person was quite rude and basically acted like they had no idea that the iPhone was even coming out. I'm basically generalizing out there at all the retail type workers who don't really care about their job or know what's going on around them.

I've found this is rampant for employment where the worker isn't passionate about the work they do. It then becomes a case of showing up for the paycheck. It's sad, but it is what it is. For us, I think it'd be nice to get a large group of us together and endeavor to go to the same location or something along those lines.

This response that Matt posted is from the Security Commander at the Potomac Town Center / Stonebridge location.

What is unfair is that they do not consistently enforce the 5:00 AM rule. If you happen to be in line before 5:00, let's say 2:00 AM for example, and security just happens to do its rounds, you will be booted. However, if you show up again at 4:00 AM, you will likely find people already in line without any sign of security before 5:00 AM. There is just way to guarantee that if you show up at 5:00 AM, that there will not already be 20 people in front of you.

I truly do not think the 5:00 AM rule is unfair. What I cannot stand is the inconsistently with which it is enforced. I will not be picking up a phone from Potomac Town Center this year.

It is official. I am first in line at Georgetown. Hope to see you guys soon. Don't leave me out here by myself for too long.

Of course it has to be the hottest day of the week.

A few of us are thinking Reston. Wasn't sure if you saw the other thread. Might be better pickings.

If you are first in line "pickings" are pretty good.

Sorry for my absence of response. Like most, I have been scrambling to make heads or tales of what changed so quickly. The short answer is no one knows except for Apple corporate. I can tell you what happened and what I have done since.

This morning at approximately 9:30 AM, the manager at the Georgetown location came outside to talk to us. The short version is, his statements were incredibly contradictory and circular and left all of us scratching our heads. What he said is that all stores in the entire country received a press release from Trudy Miller, the head of Apple PR. This was very similar to what we read last night at around 10:30 on various websites. Basically, what he explained is no store in the entire country would have any iPhone 7+s or any 7s in jet black. He said that the only stock they had on hand was for reservations that were made as part of the preorder process. I asked him point blank if there was any chance, no matter how small, I would get an iPhone 7+ if I camped out for a second day. He was cryptic at first but finally said there was no chance whatsoever. The puzzling part is moments later he said we could try another store.

I pressed him further and asked why I just spent almost 24 hours camped out and Apple is just now finding out that there would be no walk-ins available anywhere in the country. He agreed that corporate should have known but is not sure why they waited so long to let customers know.

It was explained to him that just yesterday that I was told by someone who definitely knew that there were plenty of 7+ devices available in multiple carriers, capacities, and colors - including jet black. This can one mean one thing; Apple must have reallocated this stock for other purposes. The only logical conclusion is that it was provisioned for customers participating in the Apple Upgrade Program who were shafted during the initial launch.

I then talked to another manager in the store and before he would answer my question, he asked me to explain what the senior manager had told me. He then instantly agreed with what we were previously told. It was odd though, because he seemed to be hearing this for the first time from me. He did explain that were are probably a lot of people who made multiple reservations in case their first choice was not available and there would like be a lot of cancellations tomorrow during the launch. He explained that if a reservation is cancelled, it then goes back into inventory at the store it was originally ordered and made available through Apple's website or via the Apple Store app. This means that anyone who still wants to attempt to get one through Apple should be constantly checking Apple's website or the store app between 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

I then reached out to another manager I know via text and she said would dig a little deeper to see if she could find a single 7+ for me in MD or VA. She shortly replied and said that this is the case at every store in our area. To confirm this I contacted a store in Bethesda via phone was immediately told, almost verbatim, that there would be no 7+ devices available for walk-ins. This clearly indicated to me that management had indeed explained to Specialists exactly what to say if they were asked this question. I then visited the Potomac Town Center store and was told the same thing.

I then drove to the AT&T store in Chinatown to inquire about the 7+ availability. He was very upfront and informed me that had 7 of them on hand. He said there were no jet black available and the only black device was only available in a 32 GB capacity. He said the remaining units were available in 128 and 256 GB varieties.

I then visited the AT&T store in Potomac Town Center and they were honest as well and said they were expecting some but they did not know the colors and capacities. They also told me that they have not arrived yet.
Something else that was odd is a conflicting statement that was made in the press release versus what was said during a conference call with store management that was either regional or national. The press release clearly states that the best chance of getting a 7+ tomorrow would be to visit a local carrier store. During the conference call, management was told to stress to the Specialists to sell a phone even if it had to be preordered and not to refer customers to a carrier store.

I apologize for my delayed response and also if I missed reporting anything. However, I am tired and need to take a nap.

    Bottom line is this...

DO NOT WAIT IN LINE AT ANY APPLE STORE

YOUR BEST CHANCE IS IN FACT A CARRIER STORE
