Now, I've been trying to figure this out, but what type of network does T-Mobile use, isn't it a EDGE network as well? A buddy of mine says that his iPhone works much faster on T-Mobile than it does on AT&T, and I'm just wondering if there is any truth to this, or if anyone knows the actual potential speeds, etc. in comparing the two? Thanks!

    It's exactly the same.
Your buddy is making stuff up or listening to people that made stuff up.

    Correction

    2 cell phone companies.
    Both use GSM networks.
    Each has their own network.

It would be excatly the same speeds. the only difference being how strong his signal is. maybe where he lives Tmobile has a stronger signal. If the signals are the same so is the speed.

Thanks guys, that's what I figured. I guess I'll have to give him crap about his supposed "superior" speed :p

I *think* the better question would be, which is faster, the corner of State and Main, or Willow and First Street. Either one could be better on this block, and worse on that.

Check with your friends who have ATT and T-Mo, and see who gets better reception where you go the most- THAT is who you should go with (unless you are already tied to one or the other).

Not quite -- AT&T roams on T-Mobile in Vermont, T-Mobile roams on AT&T for large chunks of the U.S.

Depending on where you live, they could be exactly the same, or slightly different. AT&T and Tmobile both theoretically operate their own independent networks, but in reality, they are both leasing towers from each other in places they need to. Tmobile primarily operates in the 1900Mhz Frequency, and AT&T is I think in the 850Mhz spectrum primarily, with some 1900 around.
