I did a trade of an old ThinkPad for a 'working' original 8GB iPhone. Nothing wrong with it from what I can tell except maybe the previous owner made an attempt to do "something" and failed. I know from owning 2 iPod touches since they came out that the iPhone is basically the same technology at heart, which means it's very difficult to brick unless you're totally stupid.
So, I did the trade - made sure the iPhone at least powered up and started the charge cycle - and got home, did a hard reset on it which worked fine. The original or previous owner kept the SIM card, and I have a spare AT&T 3G card (yes, I know the original iPhone isn't 3G capable but the SIM card still works as required for AT&T) so it functions in terms of the phone coming on, but because of the hard reset I had to activate it which went off without issues.
It works fine save for scuff marks and scratches on the back (not on the camera lens, thankfully), and seems to hold a decent charge on the battery even with Wi-Fi enabled. But it's got one issue and I've spent 2 days doing research here, at the Apple Support forums, at a few dozen other forums on the Internet, and now I figured it wouldn't hurt to actually state the problem outright, so here it is:
It won't turn off and stay off. I've done several soft resets, already done the restore once (not interested in going through all that activation crap again, to be honest), and the phone appears to be 100% functional with everything, including the phone capability itself.
But, whenever I try to power it down, holding the power/sleep button, getting the red power off slider, sliding it off, etc, it will turn off for a second or two but then it powers right back up, and I can't figure out why to save my battery life (ok, bad play on words there...)
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this exact experience, or has any clue what to do. Obviously I can't return it for a swap since I'm not the original owner, a restore to the most current 2.2 firmware doesn't seem to have resolved it, and so I'm stuck for a solution.
As a phone I admit I'll rarely turn it off for any given lengths of time, but even so, I'm stumped as to why it powers itself right back up. I put it in Airplane mode, disable all the possible wireless features (Push content, location services, everything) and it still fires itself right back up.
I have not installed any patches, like Cydia, Installer, etc, haven't used QuickPwn or Pwnage (I run OSx86, like it or not, I'm one of the people responsible for it) and it's as "clean" as an iPhone can be with just a proper restore from recovery mode and effectively nothing else.
Would be nice to shut it off if needed, so if anyone has any advice or a solution, or even better an explanation, I'd sure be interested in reading it.
Thanks... and have fun, always...
