Trying to sync my phone to the Imac but can't due to above problem. (Here's the "about" info on the Imac.)

Try a different cable. Especially some third party ones won't carry data, but will charge with no problems

What iOS is the iPhone on? iOS 15? Did you get a notification on your Mac that "A software update is required to connect to this iPhone"?
If not, you can get the 2 necessary files here and install them manually:
