In other news, scientists have noted that, when dropped from a hight of 1.5 meters, an apple will fall in the down direction. :p

Seriously, all one has to do is to look at the number of iPhones/iPod touches on a college campus to see how much press the app store gets.

I have been thinking on this topic for a while. It is interesting to see it come up as a thread. While the iPhone software development issue is interesting in how it effects the widespread use of iPhones, I think it is more interesting in how it will effect the widespread development of software for the Mac computer.

For example, while I am not a programmer, I would have to believe that there is a strong correlation between programming for the iPhone and programming for the Mac. If so, then all the people who are becoming iPhone software developers are really in training to become Mac software developers. What's more, the Appstore gives them an assured marketplace where they can sell their software for an inexpensive price, make good money ($250,000 for one developer in one month), and be assured that their software won't be stolen or pirated.

In a few months or so, we could see a whole new cadre of software designers for the Mac who cut their teeth on the iPhone. There has already been a surge of shareware and freeware for the Mac once it became Unix based. If the Appstore starts selling software for the Mac as well as the iPhone, think of how the availability of Mac software could expand exponentially.

Well, nothing is assured...that kind of money is unusual. Most apps don't make much at all. Also, everything can be and is pirated for people with jailbroken devices.

Yep, people have wished for that before, and it would definitely be nice.
