Anyone planning on queueing up? If you have before, have you had more/less success with Washington Square (indoors) vs. Bridgeport Village or Pioneer Place (outdoor)? If you have lined up at Wash Sq before, which mall entrance did you line up at? Have you had carrier store success (specifically T-Mobile), and where?

Don’t recommend going to Washington Square. They have the worse mall security and will tell everyone to stay off the mall property (including parking) until midnight. Then there’s a rampage of people running to the mall entrance (between Cheesecake Factory and Macy’s). I’ve seen several fights in the past. Not worth it.

I camped out for the iPhone 4 and 5 at Bridgeport and had the best luck there. Was first in line for both and mall security was great. Bridgeport is quiet, less traffic, recommend out of the 3 Apple Stores.

As for the downtown Apple Store...not worth going unless you’re lining up a day before. I went last year for the 7 Plus and the first hundred or so were scalpers. Didn’t get the phone I wanted. Luckily, Verizon’s online order came few days later.

In summary, Bridgeport > Pioneer > Washington Square. Make sure to dress warm and good luck!

Will you be at Bridgeport then? When are you planning on getting there? Maybe I'll see you.

Not this year. Was able to preorder from Verizon 10 minutes before midnight

I am planning on lining up at Bridgeport but I am worried since it’s an outdoor mall. It’s suppose to be raining Thursday...

You can try Washington square, but they won’t let you inside the mall til 5-6am.

That was my plan before reading this. But I don’t have to run and then fights happening. I am curious how many people will be lined up at Apple store in Bridgeport.

Are you buying the phone off contract? Or with a carrier? I know Verizon will open up in-store pick up on the 3rd, midnight.

Bridgeport would be your best bet if camping/lining

I am currently on the iPhone upgrade program. I have a preorder but will cancel if I can snag on launch day. If I cancel I might just buy the phone outright.

I am going to a concert on Thursday night so after that I will go to Bridgeport apple store.

I stopped by the Washington Square Apple store last night and I was told that they were getting ZERO units for in-store sale. Everything is pre-order only.

Wondering how one would preorder for store pickup? Was that an option if one was able to get on Apple.com on Oct 27th?

I don't know if the Apple employee I spoke with was referring to pre-order for home delivery or pre-order for store pickup. But she was very certain that there would be no in-store sales at the Washington Square location.

I tried to preorder on 10/27 and in-store pickup at Pioneer Place (my preferred store) was an option.

I went to Pooneer Place today and they said they won’t have any for purchase by non-preorder people due to being a no-sales tax state. So don’t plan on lining up here in Oregon.

Are you saying someone from Washington could not buy a phone in Oregon because there is no sales tax in Oregon? I've bought a lot of Apple gear in Oregon, but never tried to get a phone there.

I went to Washington Square last night to ask what the situation was and had a long conversation with one of the guys there that was pretty knowledgeable. Obviously they don't get told official numbers or anything (or at least they wouldn't tell it to a customer) but he was pretty sure they would not get more than the preorders because if they did do walk in purchases, the line would be insane (more insane than most other stores serving similar populations). He said the best bet would be to go to a store in a state with sales tax or try a carrier store. Another option is to preorder on Virgin America (basically sign up for service with their current 1 dollar a month for six months promo and now that you are a customer you can do a preorder as an upgrade) since their preorders go up tomorrow for a ship date of November 10. That's what he was gonna do. There's no contract for Virgin so you could just cancel the service, get it unlocked and move it to your preferred carrier (since it's not the GSM only one like AT&T and T-Mobile customers will get).

Even after that conversation I wasn't sure if he was right or not since it's not official info AND the fact that Apple announced that their stores WILL have stock for walk ins. But then I looked into it some more today and I found out that in 2015, Apple enacted a policy for the iPhone 6S that made it so their stores in the states without sales tax, they would only handle preordered products until they were more readily available for walk ins. The iPhone 8 for example didn't even clear initial stock from preorders so they allowed people to purchase on day one in store. I can't imagine they would change the policy for the iPhone X. There are articles online about how Portland Stores have virtually no lines on launch day and it's pretty stress free. It also lines up with how the handled the Apple Watch launch which had a similar demand/supply issue.

Them not having to deal with lines and scalpers makes it a lot easier for them. Oregon is a big target for scalpers. A lot of people come into town just to buy Apple products tax free. I don't know how true this is (or if it was true I don't know if it's still true) but back when the Apple Store downtown was still in the Pioneer Place right before they moved, one of the workers told me that the downtown Portland location was in the top 5 or 10 in terms of revenue of all their stores in the world. I was super surprised at the time (this was kinda before Portland population really started booming and rent skyrocketed), partly because of how tiny that Apple Store was. But it makes sense to me now. I know plenty of people who make trips here primarily to buy Apple products.

Interesting fact I learned about the downtown Apple Store: It was the last Apple Store that Steve Jobs signed off on before he passed

They won't sell it in store in Oregon until there's enough supply to do it in store after the preorders are filled out.

As of 4:55 PDT, I am 8th in line at Bridgeport, about 15 or so behind me. Fingers crossed!

I was there at 7:30 and was told no walk ins available, and to check to reserve at 6am every day, although, nothing I have found online suggests that they are doing this program in the US, only in other countries.

I got lucky by going to the downtown Verizon store (true Verizon, not authorized retailer) and lining up at about 7:35 AM. I was 7th in line and got the model of my choosing (Silver 256). Inside they said they had received 20 total units.

So, when they came out at 6:30am and announced there was no walk-in stock, I asked about T-Mobile iPhone Upgrade first-timers who were locked out of pre-orders due to T-Mobile's limitations. The staff said they had a few reserved for such a circumstance. Since I fit that bill, the Specialist gave me a 9:30 pickup reservation, and I now have a Grey 256 in my hands with T-Mobile on iPhone Upgrade. If you are in Oregon or Washington or other tax-free states, and fit that bill, please ask the staff at your stores.

Lots of stock available at Bridgeport Village and Washington Square. Just choose pickup in the app.
