For now, but Apple is going to move away from touch ID altogether. Tim Cook stated Face ID is the future. It's just a matter of others embrace it or not.

Of course Tim Cook would say that. It’s the only way they could get edge to edge for this year. Doesn’t mean TouchID is dead.

Nobody knows for sure if TouchID will or will not appear under the display.

Their delay of the X and analyst predictions, that are almost always correct, point to Apple really trying to get TouchID into the screen.

Unless you saw the recent rumors, they're indicating that all new iPhone models will have Face ID next year as well. Cook said this is the future, and I believe that it is. I think touch ID will slowly be fading away from the other iPhones and Face ID will continue to mature as it should. I think Apple has a lot of faith in this technology. Apple tried to have touch ID under the OLED display, and it failed. So they're moving on to something that they have invested elsewhere with Face ID.

I think it will work out where there is Touch ID underneath and next iPhone etc will have. both

Someone else made a similar comment to yours yesterday. I don't think Apple is going to give the user the option of having touch ID and Face ID on the same iPhone. I think that would defeat the purpose of introducing new technology with Face ID. Apple wants the user to have faith in this new technology, which we don't have experience with yet. And by having two security methods on the same iPhone, doesn't make much Sense and would conflict with each other. I believe Apple tried to implement touch ID under the display, and they couldn't. And now they're moving on to what they believe truly is the future with Face ID.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!

Apple has bought a company specialising in machinelearning and a company specialising in facial scanning and recognition. Now as it has bought these companies, it’s not going to now waste that investment and not use the fruits for all its devices! It bought a company for Touch ID back in the day..

So yeah, sorry to say but Apples MO is to stick with something for ages regardless if it’s good or not, Touch ID is RIP...

It already has face Id and passcode so I don't see your point.

Well I disagree and we will get both.

And people at Apple said they abandoned Touch ID for Face ID well over a year ago, Touch ID under the screen was looked at as a plan B in case there were issues with Face ID. Just accept it, Touch ID isn’t coming back, just like the notch isn’t being removed.

Touch ID and Face ID is the primary source of security for the iPhone, passcode is a backup method for Face ID. You're not going to see touch ID and Face ID on the same iPhone. Why would Apple introduce this new technology and then give the option to resort to touch ID under the display on the same iPhone for users to have the option. Apple is not going to give you that option. That doesn't make any sense. Again, evenrecent rumors of indicate that Face ID will be migrated to the new iPhones next year as the primary (Aside from the SE).

What you have to realize, is that Apple tried to implement touch ID under an OLED display, and it failed. They are not going to go back and re-try it and then bring it back later on, Face ID is it. It's the new technology that they are claiming as the future.

Feel free to believe what you want, but Apple is not going to give you the option of having both Touch ID and Face ID on the same iPhone. Do you have any idea how much research and development they invested in to Face ID? Touch ID will be slowly phased out, Face ID is Apples belief of the future.

I don't see the lack of Touch ID or the addition of Face ID a negative at all, but I do wish they were able to add ProMotion. Obviously with the new OLED, form factor, true tone, higher resolution, and 3D touch, they couldn't get it done. I'd rather have my phone this year than try to stuff everything they can in it.

I have a catch 22 just now. So far i have been using Touch ID for both my iPhone & iPad. I like it, its fast & reliable however i now want to change to passcode as i feels the security isnt 100% there for me.

My GF has in the past used my phone when i am asleep by placing the home button to my thumb/finger. Tbf i am a heavy sleeper. She tells me she wanted to listen to some tunes on my phone but i think she got some insecurities right now ;) as she has woke me asking who certain messages were to etc

Its all innocent on my part and have nothing per-say to hide but it just feels i need another or different layer of protection but am now concerned this will piss her off or feed any insecurity if i suddenly switch to pass code.

I know its not released and details are sketchy right now but does anyone think the iPhone X will allow Face ID to be utilised while the owner is asleep or does it use the eyes for recognition? Lol, i cant beleive im asking but i just kinda get tired of her nagging but if i go passcode i think it will freak her out more

I don’t have a problem with it, Face ID will
be the future just like Touch ID was at the time and still is with regards to the 8 and 8 Plus, all these worry’s that people have about Face ID will fade away just like the worries about Touch ID faded away.

People complain that Apple are not innovating yet when they do people still complain, part of innovation is moving forward and that’s exactly what Apple are doing here.

Solely because of the lack of Touch-ID (and, rubbing salt to the wound: lack of Pro-Motion display).

Definitely won't be preordering or purchasing it

TouchID is a big deal to me. So the fact that it is absent from the ipX...is a pretty big deal.

But that alone is not why I said 'No' to the ipX.

You guys have some trust issues. A phone is a very private device. You really should chat with her and let her know your thoughts and stop her from going into your personal device. I think Face ID only works with your eyes open.

Lol. Your not wrong. We have discussed that and to be fair is out of character for her however she is expecting our baby and she admits herself she is feeling ‘emotional’ so am willing to take her word for it that she is just hormonally out of sync Atm.
Been together 9 years and she never played like this before. I dont mind and would gladly open the phone for her but i dont like the sneakin while am sleeping thing ;)

Thanks, its reasuring the face id works only with eyes open

The Pro-Motion display sounds good for the Apple Pencil, if anything this must be what they are saving for the next iPhone successor. It's not as big of a deal since the Apple Pencil does not even work with the iPhone.
