I have an old ipod shuffle, not sure of the model. I synched it with a laptop that I gave to my parents. I want to add songs to the shuffle using my new laptop but get prompted that I have to erase and re-add all of the files all over again. Isn't there an easier way to perform such a basic task?

Turn on "Manually Manage Music" mode by checking the box on your iPod's summary screen in iTunes.

I don't have that option. I don't have a summary screen, only "Settings" and "Contents". I have the latest version of itunes and version 1.04 of the shuffle software.

Turn on "Manually Manage Music" mode by checking the box on your iPod's summary screen in iTunes.

Google "How to put iPod Shuffle into manually manage music mode". Remember always ask Google first.

From what I gather the 3rd gen shuffle has the "manually manage music" feature, not the 2nd gen which I have.

I'd use some sort of third party iPod manager to extract the songs on it first, then resync with the new computer, using the old songs and new songs in iTunes

Must be a 2nd gen or earlier, you'll need to use something like sharepod to extract the songs then add to itunes and resync it.
