iPod iPod software replacement?

Is there any free iPod software replacment out there? I don't want to replace iTunes, just the software running on the iPod (Nano).

The problem is that the iPod displays only Song/Artist/Album and I need to display Composer/Name(2 lines)/Comment(2 lines) and I don't want the jerky scrolling (which reminds me of the horrible jerky "Marquee" Windows screensaver). I also don't like the menu system and would like it configurable.

Is there something like that out there?

Thanks for the link. It seems to be a bit of a "work in progress". I downloaded it, but I'm scared...very scared. Maybe I'll install it after I've had a couple bottles of wine. (for courage )

Is your Nano a first gen? It doesn't seem to do much on the metal nano, from the support list. It seems it would do quite a lot on my 3G full size, but I don't really have the desire or guts. But maybe if you poured me a glass also...
