iPod touch Ipod Touch direct firmware update

I just got my first gen itouch back from apple, it had its battery replaced, its currently running the first firmware that came out in 2007. Im unable to download the 3.0 or 3.1 on my computer, is there a way to download directly onto an iPod touch?

nope. you have to do it via itunes.
why can't you download the update?

My computer is having trouble downloading anything and I don't know how long it will take to fix.

You can do the OS update from any computer system that meets the requirements, just make sure you're signed into an iTunes account that has paid for the upgrade. Also be sure to not Erase & Sync the iPod accidentally to clear any information you managed to repopulate on it.
