iPod iPod Won't Shut off....

My Ipod nano went through the wash and I thought it was done for. After some tinkering, I was able to get it to work and the battery life is is not that bad(errr 6 to 7 hrs). The only problem is I can not trun it off. Even if I leave it alone it does not turn off. Holding the play/pause button does not turn it off and I have reset it multiple times. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions?
