Protecting Israel is undoubtedly one of the motivations for the war in Iraq. But in the long run, I think the administration wants to change the way the U.S. can exert influence on the region. Right now we rely too heavily on unpopular regimes in Israel and Saudi Arabia. In Bush's fantasy land, Iraq can become a state full of happy Muslims singing U.S. praises. In that sense, the effort sets out to weaken Israel, or at least diminish its strategic importance to the U.S.
