IS Anyone buying an out of date ATV FOR 249.00

So a while back, I saw the Apple price go up to 249.00. WTF… AND then I saw Costco was Sold Out…
Costco has them back in stock for 239.00. Hurry UP guys…

Any one here willing to pay up?

Nope and since the ATV's don't really change there's no way they could justify the price on a new gen even if they didn't raise it again. Apple lost me as a frequent updater when they changed prices overnight on current and refurb products. Absolute money grab and insulting, it will be years before I upgrade anything and if Apple tries to extort yearly prices increases after this I may never buy new again.

I've got three now, no interest in AI functions, so I'll be happy with them until they don't accept updates.

edit: I checked, I actually have one 1st gen ATV4k and two 3rd gen 4K (in 2024 and 2026). The 1st gen is running perfectly smooth and I bought that one in 2018 as a refurb from Best Buy lol.

Nope. I have a 2015 A1625, I don’t use Siri or need ethernet, I’ll be happy with 4k and wifi 6 support. Just ordered an A2737 on ebay $102 pretax.
Edit: The generation titles always confuse me, 1,2,3,4 1080p, then 1,2,3 4k. Always see 3rd gen (for example) and have to dive deep to see which 3rd gen.

I have old TVs at home and finally got to enjoy faster internet service so decided to ditch cable and sign up for streaming TV. So I needed AppleTVs for my TVs. I was going to wait a bit for the new version but once Apple announced the price increase I was lucky enough to get 3 AppleTV with ethernet at Costco for $139 each. I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

🤦🏻‍♂️ my friend....I don't even really know what to say here, other than to just dump some reality on you and hope you're capable of accepting it. The 64 GB model, previously at $129, cost Apple around $70-80 to produce and land in the U.S. as an inventory item. That's only a 38% margin, which is slightly less than Apple's goal of around 40% for all products. Some estimates suggest the cost ballooned to $115 per unit months ago, which means Apple was making next to nothing on every unit sold for a while. With NAND prices now approaching nearly 300% increase compared to 2 years ago, Apple had no choice but to increase the price or they would effectively start losing money on every sale. All data appears to indicate that they ate it for as long as they could, sacrificing billions in profit by doing so (meaning across all product lines), hoping to weather the storm, until it got to be untenable.

I'm happy to hold Apple accountable for the actual greedy things they do and have done under Tim Cook. This is not one of them, and facts won't allow you to pretend otherwise.

My own reasons for updating now - I don’t care about Siri or AI, wifi7 won’t help me much as I have a fairly new wifi6 router. I have delayed buying a new ATV for about 3 years now, my old one is 1080p. Who knows what the price will be on the updated model, and from what is speculated, will have no features I want. I bought mine at a sale price, a little higher than what it used to be, but likely better than the future model.

I was on the same boat. Waiting, waiting, waiting,.... and when they increased the price and I was able to get 3 for the old price it was a no-brainer. Unless Apple comes out with some revolutionary AppleTV, none of the "new features" will probably be important to me. Unless it comes in Dark Cherry. 😂😂😂

Yeah, any model you can get on sale today will still be a great Apple TV in 2027. After such a long update cycle, I am hoping for some additional AV updates in addition to AI capabilities.

An AI feature I would be interested in though: Being able to ask about the actors on screen. Most apps don't support this feature. Not sure how feasible this is though... Willing to be surprised! 😀

There’s a reason why Apple’s TV boxes cost the most on the market, they are the best. Period. They really have zero competition in what they offer. I’ve tried all others and it’s not even close. Just because something came out years ago doesn’t mean it’s bad. Also someone people don’t care about Ai features, also it’s possible the new model will cost even more since the new model will have more than 4GB of RAM.

No. I'm still using at Apple TV 4 (HD as they retroactively called it). It works, I'm fine. My TV is 1080p, which is also fine. I might get a new one eventually, but not the one now for $249. What a freaking joke. Apple is just so pathetic sometimes.

I bought one last month to replace my old AppleTV in my home office. Man it is blazing fast compared to the older one. Apps load instantly. Content within apps also seems faster. Don't regret it one bit.

Same here. Also replaced the HDMI cable with a new one and tested it on the old 1080p ATV first, that alone made a big difference. Then switched in the new ATV. It’s great. No regrets here either.

Other than the free ones I have from DirecTV Stream, I've only ever bought ATVs preowned of FB.

They can usually be sniped for $70-100 (at most).

I really don't know what I'll replace my ATV 4kGen1s with when a need arises.
I'm sure as shinola not spending $250 though, I can tell you that.

It will definitely be preowned value pricing if it's ATV boxes.

Honestly, I could probably get by fine with any android stick, especially once I tweaked a bit. A couple years ago I set up a couple Google TV dongles (the ones with remotes) and fully customized the experience with a third party launcher and remote button changer and got it all dialed in just how I needed it (it was for senior citizens) and the experience was actually pretty awesome once I put the work in to make it do just what I wanted.

I basically use YouTubeTV, YouTube, Plex, Pluto & Stremio.

Those can be had for nearly any platform.

😅 I got distracted by the "ATV" in the title of your thread. I thought that you meant an "all terrain vehicle (ATV)" for $249.00. I am still using an old Apple TV, and stream shows/movies from Netflix and Rakuten Viki. I also watch various shows (not movies) at YouTube.

I have 2 1st Generation Apple TV 4K, 1 2nd Generation and 1 3rd Generation and I cannot tell any functional difference between them frankly (although there may be difference in support for Dolby Vision, but they are connected to sets that are appropriate for compatible specs (4K minimum)). What a new Apple TV will do is beyond me, so buying the current model would be fine apart from the appalling and unjustifiable price hike, but if I need it, I need it. Waiting for a new model just seems pointless to me.

Pretty sure we are leaking masses of personal information to big media companies, regardless of what hardware we stream from. The thing that sucks about the cheaper devices is surface-level UX stuffed full of ads.
