Is Applecare the same for new and old MBP?

I have applecare that I bought for one of my old Macbook Pros I don't own anymore. I didn't buy it with the computer so it didn't auto enroll. I never activated or enrolled it but if you add the new one to the cart it has a different part number. Just debating on whether I can activate it or if I should sell it. I would hate to try to activate it and it be wrong and not be able to use it or sell it.
