I'm not sure I understand the writer's point, but: It seems to me that analytics is but one tool in evaluating the potential of a player's contribution to a team. And, of more value in some sports than others.
As far as non-player involvement, I can look at my own favorite sport: Car racing. I've done dirt circle track and sports cars, for some 22 years. I enjoy watching racing on TV. But I'm bored to tears by programs about car racing.
When I was a kid, I listened to many baseball games on the radio. I had friends who were walking encyclopedias for statistics. Me? Nope. No real interest.
