Edge is ungodly slow. Especially if you are in the Seattle area and can take advantage of HSPA+. I thought getting an iPhone and suffering through edge but decided on getting the Galaxy Nexus instead.

Edge is as fast as a carbon fiber road bike on the autobahn. I'm switching to verizon because AT&T has only edge where I live. It's asss.

Why do you get Edge speed even on AT&T?

I'm dealing with the Edge on T-Mobile and honestly it's fine for the essentials.

Most of the time I'm near a wi-fi zone, but when I'm not, I can still get my emails, check the weather, google something, Siri and iMessage work fine, and also GPS/maps works (though it can be sluggish sometimes).

The one thing I really just don't do over Edge is stream videos because it's basically impossible and stutters every 2 seconds.

I haven't read any of the thread but the answer to the question is yes. Using EDGE is absolute torture.

Another conformation that YES, Edge is very slow. I find it unbearable, as I'm pretty spoilt with my 5mb/s down on 3G, and 50mb/s down on Wifi...

It's defiantly not blazing fast, but usable. Pandora loads fine on AT&T Edge just to give you an idea of what you can do. YouTube videos also load fine as long as you are not trying to play HQ videos. Most websites will load reasonably unless there are a lot of images.

uh what edge are you using I could never get a youtube video to load on edge ever

well... after all this, is there any plan i can get for like $30 a month w/o contract that will let me get 3G data... on my iPhone? im seriously thinking about spending $45 a month for straighttalk... but then i gotta buy the e71 T.T

yo. im getting tmobile soon, the $30 plan for unlim txt/web + 100min. im going to put the sim in my iphone 4, which ufortunately only supports E. is Edge really that slow? i live in Seattle which has pretty good coverage, I realize that its slower than 3g -____-. but how slow is it?
Thanks :D

I have my wife on a 3gs with her Tmo. When my 4S with ATT actually gets downloading it is faster but to be honest it seems that her 3gs on tmo starts to do things faster. We are over in Kirkland. I think it is livable if you set your expectations accordingly.

if you want a cheap 3g, go with h2o. well, not as fast as 3g, but not as slow as edge. it's about 300kbps++ for down and up..

It depends. I used EDGE for a year on my E71, because 3G at the time was unstable on AT&T, and it worked just fine. Even YouTube would load. On the Galaxy S, I switched over to 3G, but in a few areas that don't have 3G yet, the EDGE was fine. In one place in NH, it Speedtested close to 200kbps, and felt really fast. Pandora runs fine on EDGE, back before we were 100% 3G overlaid, my friend streamed it on his iPhone 3G in the middle of a park, and it was great.

All that being said, if you are going to go with T-Mobile, get a device that support AWS HSPA+. There is no reason to be using an iPhone on T-Mobile. They have a bunch of great Android phones.

but i want an iPhone... its so sexy and clean. also i like the idea of having an iPod and Phone together :D

Op, why in hell would you wanna cripple an iPhone on tmo's Edge speed?!?!?! And, yes, Edge is pull your hair out slow!

If you must use tmo, just get an android phone so you could at least take advantage of tmo's decent "4G" network.

Is H2O available in Seattle area? iP4 works on H2O without unlocking because it's piggybacking on AT&T network. Friend of mine uses his 4 on H2O and 3G speed is very good.

nope we do not have any regional carriers or low cost competitors except like virgin mobile and boost in seattle. at least that i know of.

accordin to CNET.com...edge sucks :) iPhone's Wi-Fi is 'bout 13 times faster than using edge. i have my iphone 4s wit prepaid tmobile sim and it's cheap (u can go as low as $10 for 90 days! or monthly plan @$15 per month). i have wifi @home and @work (any bookstore, coffee shop, and even nordstrom give u access to wifi) so no need for cellular data (completely turn it OFF).
